I found this thread when faced with the same problem as in the original post. ie "When I convert any document - docx, odt, epub, azw3, txt - to mobi format my chapter headings in the book will display with a leading number:
1. Chapter 1 2. Chapter 2" I'm using Libre Office 7 to edit the docx file, and calibre to convert it to mobi format. On attempting to edit the Heading 1 styles I was unable to change the Numbering Style because it was ""disabled when chapter numbering is assigned to a paragraph style". To cut a long story short, I found LO 6.4 help page https://help.libreoffice.org/6.4/en-...l?DbPAR=WRITER "To Add Automatic Numbering to a Heading Style Choose Tools - Chapter Numbering, and then click the Numbering tab. In the Paragraph Style box, select the heading style that you want to add chapter numbers to. In the Numbers box, select the numbering style that you want to use, and then click OK." which can also be used to Remove automatic numbering from a Heading Style, which then removes the unwanted numbers on chapter headings when converted to mobi. |

Make sure numbering is off on paragraph style for a heading.
Create a new custom paragraph style for heading, setting desired Level. Never use the built-in Heading1, Heading2, etc. Create new styles and don't use Inherit from (that's only reliable in odt or Export to PDF, not Save As docx). Each style should be complete. Never Ever open/edit the EXTRA Save As docx in LO. Only edit the odt file. Add the docx to Calibre and make an epub2. Make sure it's set to make a new file at each heading that should be a page break. Check TOC. Convert the epub to mobi. We use dual mobi for Smashwords and azw3 for local Kindles. Firmware from 3.4.3 and later works with azw3. https://www.amazon.com/gp/help/custo...MQC26VQQMM8XSW Only ancient kindles before KK3 (but also DXG) need mobi. You can't upload mobi to Amazon KDP. That wants epub2. |

@Nhulunbuy Given that you have a Kindle Paperwhite, why convert to Mobi instead of KF8?

Note KF8 = azw3 file ending. A mobi file ending can have various things in it.
Everything here https://www.amazon.com/gp/help/custo...MQC26VQQMM8XSW from 3.4.3 works with KF8/AZW which also allows embedded fonts. No embedded fonts and other stuff missing in mobi (except dual mobi which has old mobi/KF7 and KF8 inside). |

VERY late to the party here but this thread at least addresses the same issue.
Quoth's suggestion to convert to PDF solves the initial problem, however, my book has extensive endnotes and they all vanished. First - the problem is very much Libre/Open Office and here I was looking a Calibre. When I convert to HTML or VIEW in HTML from either L/OO I see the same numbering issue. Maybe I'm not doing it properly but none of the suggestions about the autonumbering settings seem to make any difference. At this point I only see a brute force solution - editing out the <Li> tags in html either in a raw file or in Calibre itself. That said, if anyone can point me to an updated solution, please do. Don't use / convert via HTML.
LO Writer: Edit in ODT. Explicitly edit Anchors/Hyperlinks bothways for footnotes/endnotes and don't use Insert FootNotes/Endnotes in Writer or Word. Manual. Extra Save As in docx if using Writer, and never edit that in Writer. |
