I do have a backup system in place and I also test the backups on a regular basis. An end result of spending too many years in IT where I dealt with too many people who lost pretty much everything due to not having any backups or never testing to make sure that the backups were working.

Do you think this will affect all Kindles no longer receiving firmware updates? | |

The date will likely not be the April 22 cutoff for older K4PC installs or the older K4A installs cutoff of May 26 but the rumour is that Amazon will remove older eInk Kindles from being able to sync new books at some point in the fall (the dates mentioned seem to be random). So far, these rumours seem to lack any corroboration but given Amazon's pattern of behaviour, I would not be surprised to see owners of older Kindles getting an email that their devices will no longer to be able to download ebooks from Amazon with a cutoff date.

Where are you seeing these rumors? I guess I'll hold off on trying to put a new battery in my old K4BNT. And now I'm wondering if any of my Kindles will be able to sync if these rumors are true (in addition to a K4BNT, I have a Voyage and an original/8th gen Oasis).

				Amazon and DRM changes

Yes! And I’ll never understand when people say it takes too much time. What are they doing that it’d be a process they’d have to initiate themselves every time? Only one of my 3 backups is a manual process and that’s because I keep it on a thumb drive that stays with my Uncle. He brings it to me whenever he knows he’s gonna come over and stay awhile. It’s my least up to date backup, but I think some backup is better than no backup. Yeah I was taught to test my backups too. I do so often. We can’t get people to backup so there’s no way in hell they’d ever test their backups if they had them. Last edited by JBaby; 05-06-2025 at 11:22 AM.

Do you think this would also apply to the PW3 since that no longer gets firmware updates?

Unlikely to be a new question...

I apologise for asking what is probably an often answered question, I have looked about and I find a lot of old answers, which will no longer be useful with version changes. I would like to DeDRM my Kindle books. I have installed the plugin, I have downloaded the PC Kindle app, I have signed into it. Works. Configuring the DeDRM plugin though... I get to the screen to add the key and Calibre is not presenting me anything. The green plus tells me "The default encryption key for Kindle on Mac/PC could not be found". The "Import Existing Keyfiles" brings up a file dialog, but I have no idea what a key file looks like, or where it might be found. Running Calibre 7.26 (no objection to updating to 8.3.0, just haven't gotten round to it - the notes didn't suggest it would significantly help me). DeDRM is 7.2.1 Kindle App is 2.7.1 Any pointers would be gratefully received. |

They care, because that would mean they can no longer read newer books on their Kindles. They might not care about DRM removal, but I think they would care about reading their books. We don't know how many people still read on older models, though. |

And we don't know Amazon's definition of older models. If it means no longer getting new firmware updates, then that means the PW3 would be toast and a lot have the PW3.
