I think there were multiple reasons. Yours sound plausable. I would think another big one is color.
Sure.

And sometimes customers think what they want is what everyone else wants.

Amazon dropped the PW5 (6.8" screen) for the PW5 (7" screen). Both are BW. I think that was done because 7" may be more common and thus cheaper. That and Amazon crippled the PW6 somewhat.

It would be trivial for kobo. Just compile the appropriate driver into the kernel or provide the module and load it on boot or require the user to do a modprobe.

Buetooth clickers and keyboards work on the PineNote in both koreader and the calibre viewer. Enter, PgUp, PgDn, up arrow, down arrow, left arrow, and right arrow all work.

Whenever I see eReaders in the wild people usually have the brightness cranked anyways so I wouldn't be surprised if a lot people frankly don't care or even notice the reduced contrast.

Personally I find it readable in shaded natural light without the frontlight too, is it worse than non-color models I own? Sure. Is it unreadable? No. Getting a fast, pen equipped color eReader at a decent price with the tradeoff of slightly worse contrast was IMO worth it.
When the light is good enough I do not use the front light. But with a color Kobo, I'd have to use the light much more often. That's due to the reduced contrast. IMO, having a color Reader without a good BW Reader is a really bad idea as not everyone wants color and if I did, what we have that passes for color would not be it.

That would mean I would probably have to put on glasses when reading, and I basically only wear them when I drive or shop. They're hardly ever worn in the house. I like holding an eReader like a book.

But, again, different people have different priorities.

I usually get "sentimentally" attached to my old gadgets, so I try to fix them when they go out.

My main interest in new eReaders is seeing what has changed, not usually normally in buying them.

I didn't realize that. I thought they were just fudging their 6.8" reader dimensions because 7" sounded better.

That's how much I don't really care about Kindles now.

That's my main concern in an eReader, screen contrast. And I do realize that others are less concerned about it. I think that might have something to do with differences in eyes. My eyes like contrast. In my view the high contrast screen is what makes an eReader superior for reading.

Are you still using the Clara HD? Have you tried the Clara BW?
The Clara HD is not even Carta 1200.
I went from Onyx Poke5 to Go6 (1200 -> 1300) and I found the upgrade worthwhile.

This thread got me checking options and comfirmed that here in Aotearoa, there are not many. Pocketbook STILL doesn't sell here and won't list prices for here, although their price in euors is at least 10% higher than Kobo 'equivalents' before factoring in the cost of arranging 3rd party shipping. Meanwhile, Boox prices are MUCH higher than comparable/competitor Kobo products - their 7 inch colour reader is about 150% the price of the Libra Colour. So it looks like I'll be stick with my Kobos for the foreseeable future, possibly getting a newer Sage if I can

The first thing Amazon did was to remove Download & Transfer via USB for new Kindles before they removed it for everyone.

Also, the PW6 uses MTP (media transfer protocol). And you do not have access to the system directory so the workaround for side loaded covers does not work any longer.
