Android isn't linux, though using an adapted Linux Kernel.
Chrome OS wasn't Linux, though using an adapted Linux Kernel, but now is Linux on ARM and x86-64.

Linux Mint 21.3 and Calibre 7.23 this is still the solution. The Calibre official documentation still links to this thread so perhaps the mods can update the post title.

Waiting for Cache Lock Error

Hi, I've read through four pages and tried all the suggestions but when i try to install calibre (yes from the calibre page!) on PopOS22.04 it says i am missing the libxcb-cursor0 but when I try to install those i get Waiting for cache lock: Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock-frontend. It is held by process 24293 (apt) again and again and again.

I am an absolute n00b with Linux as this is my first experience with it and I would really love to get Calibre to work as I switched to Linux on my old Macbook purely to support the new Kobo Claras that my kids have as I couldn't add books to them with my older Calibre version on MacOS Monteray.

Thanks for any advice.

That can happen because an update or install is already running, or because you didn't prefix the apt command with sudo.

Hi, thanks - I am on PoP!OS_22.04 and my Calibre version is 8.2.1 which I got from the Pop App Store. Which is better than the version 5 which the Terminal installed for me originally.

It says there is an update available but I'm new to Linux and just assumed I could click on the link in Calibre same as MacOS.

Hi, That's exactly what I am doing, it then asks for my password, which I enter and then I get line after line of the Cache Lock waiting

Waiting for cache lock: Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock-frontend. It is held by process 24293 (apt)
Waiting for cache lock: Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock-frontend. It is held by process 24293 (apt)

this goes on and on until i close out the Terminal window and kill it. I've tried leaving it open for a long time but it doesn't succeed.

You're having some form of updater running in the background. Check what's launching on startup.
From PopOS announcement: Update and upgrade Pop!_OS automatically from the OS Upgrade & Recovery panel in Settings! Minimize interruption by scheduling what day & time that you want your computer to perform the updates. Scheduled automatic updates include support for Debian, Flatpak, and Nix packages.

You are best to stop automatic updates and do the update checking manually. That way the updating mess won't get in the way of anything. You can just do it when you aren't doing anything else.

thank you, thank you alumoi! I switched off the automatic updates, restarted my laptop and then did

sudo apt install libxcb-cursor0

and it ran! I was then able to run the script from the Calibre website and it installed the update

Linux really is a learning curve, but worth it to revive my old macbook.

You are thinking of Windows. Updates are not an issue on Linux. Though having all on Manual Review is best.

If you read post #55 in this thread, it says that he has updates scheduled for 10pm. Those are the updates I am referring to.
