And even though people who own an e-ink kindle can dedrm for now, there is no guarantee how long that ability lasts too. I mean, technically they could force a firmware update even for really old models so if you connect to wifi to download books it updates first and then the ability could be gone.

If the new eBook is not an Amazon exclusive, then it's not bad news as you'll be able to buy it in ePub and remove the DRM.

It's bad news to the extent that Kobo no longer reliably price-matches all Kindle prices.

I've never had a Kindle, and since the PC option is locked down my question:
If I buy an Amazon Kindle PaperWhite 2012 it has a resolution of 758x1024 and in this resolution I will have all the books from this device or during the conversion you can increase the resolution (I want to have color pages as it is there are in manga and novels, not all black and white)

Currently kindle for pc 1.17 works for me even for books published after 2023.

you're saying even with the new drm amazon implemented a week ago that you're able to remove it using k4pc 1.17 ?

There was no new Amazon DRM implemented a week ago. K4PC 2.40 just no longer downloads new books. 1.17 shouldn't download any books published after 2022, but you can still remove the DRM from books published before 2023 with it.

That is very odd as it is not working for others who have tried. What version of Windows are you using?

I see from your post history that you asked about running the Kindle app under Wine. Is that what you are doing?

Yes. It didn't work before but it does now.

There are still lots of fixed-layout books/magazines that have old AZW4 format, and I was able to download them using very old 1.1x or 1.2x K4PC until last year (2024) too.

IIRC the previous cutoff for these books was somewhere around Oct 2024, not "before 2023" as stated in https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=361503 .

That was when I had to switch to 1.39.

It would be more interesting to know if you can download books after Oct 2024 or Apr 2025.

using "comix" still worked for a manga released today that wouldnt download with the kindle pc app v2.4.0

K4PC 1.17.1 (44183) can now download Kindle eBooks published before April 22, 2025 without any problems. This is the same limitation as the more recent version 2.3.0 (70673). I confirmed this with Windows 11, version 23H2.
Surprisingly, they applied the new limitation to all previous K4PC versions, so it appears that previous K4PC versions are "back."

Of course, that version doesn't support KFX, so you'll receive KF8 (AZW3) always.
