Thanks, @SpartanHeavy. I tried just now from a fresh restart and it's the same. But I will try again when I get some time. I am using the latest KUAL version, from 2025-04-19, and with the DevCerts update.

When you try again, make sure the firmware is up to date. I believe the latest firmware, version 4.1.4, needs to be installed for it to work.

Ah. I'm at 4.1.0 - going through the step-wise updates now to get to 4.1.4 - thanks!

Still no joy - now I get a "This device is not authorized as a test Kindle by the developer of this item". And there is a "Test Kindle Installation Result" file which says "Your Kindle is no longer a test Kindle..."
Do I have to register the Kindle on Amazon to make all this work? Thanks! |

After registering or turning on airplane mode, just reinstall MKK and the DevCerts update. |

Thanks for the great info! I put it into airplane mode after disconnecting from WiFi, and reinstalled MKK and the DevCerts update. KUAL then throws "An error occurred: Main class instantiation threw a Runtime Exception. Please contact the developer."
I tried again from a full Reset to Factory Defaults, and got the same thing. I'll try again, but you know what they say about insanity! |

All you need to do is copy the KUAL-KDK-1.0.azw2 file to your documents folder. The .bin installer shouldn't be used. You may be able to fix it by running the uninstall.bin file from the KUAL archive. |

@SpartanHeavy, you are a lifesaver! Thank you so much. It was the booklet - I ran the uninstall and now I'm in! I had installed the booklet AND the azw2 file. Now to figure out how to use Koreader. Thanks again for sharing your expertise.

I have installed kual using the .bin installer, then copied KUAL-KDK-1.0.azw2 to document, but when i try to open it, I get: Quote:
Also tried installing the hotfix bin (I didn't know which I should've used), but apparently it is not compatible with my device, because it does not enable the "Update your Kindle" menu item. Can you give me a hand here? Thank you |

For other noobs like me: 1- Update Kindle firmware. I had to update to 4.1.2, then 4.1.3 and 4.1.4; 2- Uninstall Kual, if you have installed it; 3- Copy KUAL-KDK-1.0.azw2 to documents directory, if you haven't already. 4- I had also installed these DevCerts, not sure if that was needed. I saw a post on Reddit saying the keys have expired, so tried installing it. ![]() I'm trying to make this Kindle Display with my old kindle: https://github.com/dennisreimann/kindle-display |

Just wanted to comment my experience with "jailbreaking" my kindle keyboard (K3)
I ran into the issue which many users have been experiencing recently on this thread, going in a constant cycle of factory resetting, installing jailbreak, installing MKK(devCerts), installing KUAL, and receiving the "This item is not signed by a registered developer". My kindle(k3) was running the stock firmware (3.0.2.x) when doing this, and I assumed since i could not update over wifi, there was no further updates for my kindle, but I realized the latest firmware for my device was in fact 3.4.3. I found instructions on this amazon page which also hosts the update files needed to manually update the firmware. I tried the process again at version 3.4.0 (still didnt work), and then eventually at the latest 3.4.3, when I stopped receiving the error, and KUAL finally opened. This may not be the solution for every kindle, but with something as simple as updating the firmware jumping over my head for a week, I figured I would share my experience to anyone else who may be running into this issue. Check what firmware your kindle is running, update it to the latest, and try again. These devices deserve a second life! Last edited by ashtann_; 05-04-2025 at 02:00 PM.
