The date was the point with Kindle for PC, not with eink Kindles.

It is always possible that with a firmware update, the ability to dedrm ANY books, older or newer can be changed. So now I know that 5.18.2 did not change the ability for older books to be processed. The publication date definitely is the whole point when it comes to the K4PC app. We don't yet know for sure if the date matters when it comes to the 5.18.2 firmware. So...if you know of a FREE and new book, I'll be happy to try that too.

The point with Kindle for PC was that we already knew that books from version 2.4.1 and later would not work with DeDRM regardless of publication date. So you're currently out-of-luck for the Kindle for PC method with books that cannot be downloaded to 2.4.0. We did not know whether a newer version of Kindle firmware would also have newer KFX DRM that DeDRM cannot handle on all books. Now we know that at least previously published books are fine. I would guess that newly published books would be fine too, but it will be nice to get that confirmed. |

Does anyone know who to stop a non-jailbroken Kindle from being able to download the new firmware for new enough Kindles? If that means blocked the server address that would do too as long as that also allows downloading eBooks.

Fill up storage so there isn't enough room for the firmware download has been suggested in the past, as I recall.

fwiw, I have now found 2 free books that won't download to k4pc 2.4.0 (require updated version) so I am going to send those to my newly updated PW5 at 5.18.2 to confirm they will still work. One of the books says the publication date is April 22nd, not the 23rd, and the other is the 25th.

OK...you can see from the attached photos that I had 2 books that would not download to 2.4.0 and wanted me to update versions. Sent them to my PW5 which I manually updated last night to the new firmware 5.18.2. Imported both books to Calibre. No problems. Imported correctly as KFX and not kfx-zip, so drm removed. Also converted them to epub, no issues. So, in short, firmware 5.18.2 is working fine for me. No changes compared to 5.18.1 in terms of importing to calibre/dedrm. |

Matches up with what my acquaintance with the ColorSoft said after they manually updated but first hand from you instead of second hand.

So, it's fair to say that this is bad news for anyone who doesn't own a Kindle eink device and wants to transfer and DeDRM upcoming releases?

The K4A method still works though for how much longer is an interesting question.

I mean...maybe someone will crack a newer K4PC...but that is an if, not a when. And even though people who own an e-ink kindle can dedrm for now, there is no guarantee how long that ability lasts too. I mean, technically they could force a firmware update even for really old models so if you connect to wifi to download books it updates first and then the ability could be gone.
