The solution worked for 99.99% of people, I definitely agree with that. But I am in that 0.001% of people who are using KPW1 and not updated from 5.3.3, as it is working beautifully with the help of all developers here. Suddenly it stopped working in my PW1, and I went through all threads to find solutions, and I tested almost all methods from the day new "dev cert" release (Maybe I missed some posts which actually would have helped me). Nothing helped me to make KUAL work until I updated to 5.6.1. .......Why?? I don't know it is some random testing. I posted Method I followed here, not to offend anyone, but maybe someone like me searching for a solution may land up in my post and get some help. I love you all, devs here. You are all great. ![]() |

First of all thank you for posting your experience. Generic solution did not work for me, so I will try yours. I also have PW1 but I have 5.3.4 firmware version. How did you update to 5.4.4? Thank you in advance. Last edited by rafalele; 04-24-2025 at 11:59 AM. |

As you want to upgrade, the process is straightforward, I guess. try this method. 1) download the bin file from here 2) Place in the root folder of Kindle, 3) Go to settings > update the kindle : click it 4) It should update to 5.4.4.2 now. - I think you can update from 5.3.3 to 5.6.1 directly no need to update to 5.4.4.2 - Do all the steps ( Dev cert + MRPI + KUAL ) when you are in 5.3.3 then in final step update to 5.6 |

I have been afraid to update the firmware because of the problems I understand are caused by > 5.6, but if that is the best option, I will do that. Thank you chaitanyaI for sharing your experience, and thank you to NiLuJe and everyone else who has contributed to these wonderful tools! |

I have reset my kindle PW1 and now I can not register it. It is connected to my Wifi but tells all time "Connection error. Try again later." I am in 5.3.4 firmware version. How did you manage to register it after reseting it? PD: I have seen I can continue with the process without registering. I will try it when updating to the 5.6.1 version PD2: Registered after updating to 5.6.1 with no problem THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!! I have Koreader last version running again in my PW1 following the instructions you posted here: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...postcount=1333 Of course I want also to thank all the developers that made possibile to use my Kindle with a better reading software through all this 13 years. The only thing that I want to know if there is a way to prevent Amazon to update my Kindle in any way (firmware, contents, jailbreak...) because I want to use OTA updates for Koreader and I need the Wifi connection for it. Until this reset and update I have made I had installed the backdoor method. Last edited by rafalele; 04-25-2025 at 11:47 AM. |

Koreader working after following your instructions. Now I have it registered after updating to last firmwre version 5.6.1. Somebody knows if there is a way to prevent Amazon to update/change my Kindle software? Before I had the "backdoorlock" installed, but I do not know if theres is something like that for 5.6.1 version. I would like to use OTA updates for Koreader. |

You could try the OTARenamer addon but for a PW1 (5th gen), 5.6.1 seems to be the last firmware version and after 10 years, I personally doubt that Amazon is going to issue another firmware upgrade (the files in 5.6.1 are dated from 2015-Jun-23).

This item is not signed by an authorised developer. Please contact the developer.
![]() Just wanted to say I'm also in the same boat with not being able to open KUAL. Initially got the expired certs error and now get "This item is not signed by an authorised developer. Please contact the developer." Kindle Paperwhite 1 with fw 5.3.3 and Aeroplane Mode constantly on. I'm hesitant to update the fw as @chaitanyal suggests because the newer it gets the more issues there appears to be. Tried updating just the keys, didn't work. Tried a factory reset and full fresh jailbreak and KUAL install, didn't work. Tried to change the date just to get past the cert expiration but I can only figure out how to change the time, not the date. Luckily this has only happened to my Kindle because I was trying to put new textbooks on for uni so I've warned my partner never to exit KOReader on theirs. I would greatly appreciate some help as I struggle to read for long periods of time on my computer screen and would really rather read textbooks on the Kindle instead. Thank you! ![]() |
