For what it may be worth, files downloaded via D&T were tied to one device and its serial number. You would have to remove DRM and then move them to another Kindle at which point, sync would not work.

I suspect that files transferred from another Kindle would have the same issue.

Yes, that would indeed be the case I reckon. So not as simple as I probably made it sound, as it would have required the extra DeDRM or NoDRM step via calibre.

Just got bitten by this for the first time. Looking on my pw4 I see that a .kfx has been downloaded. How can I deal with that and get it into Calibre?

You need the deDRM plugin 10.0.9 or alpha and the KFX Input plugin for Calibre.

Thank you. I gave that a try, but I get an error about DRM. Given this I assume this is one that cannot presently be handled.

Plug your Kindle into the USB and drag/drop the .kfx file to calibre and see if that works. If you are copying the .kfx off of the Kindle and then adding to calibre, that will not work.

KFX is made up of multiple files. So you have to drag/drop the .kfx file from the source directory so the KFX Input plugin can grab all of the various files and merge them together in the .kfx file.

You were correct, that did the trick.

I'm debating how to deal with this problem in the future. Which firmware level added KFX support? I am considering downgrading to a firmware that would force Amazon to provide an AZW3 instead.

For the PW4 it always had KFX support. There's no going back past the original firmware.

5.6.5 or soon after.

Only PW3 and earlier can be downgraded to this.

No doubt on the general principle of all gadgets; that you rarely can install a FW earlier than the FW at release / launch.

Really to have azw3 rather than KFX you need a K3 to PW1 inclusive. They never got KFX. The K3 got azw3 on an update.

Really hate that I cannot buy and enjoy a book that I pay for. I won't be giving amazon anymore money for ebooks. I'll be going back to the library for all my books from now on.

As far as I can tell there is no alternative to actually own most new books legally other than to purchase a hard copy?

Define "most new books". There are plenty of new books sold without DRM by other retailers. Not Amazon, though.
