Now starting Siân Griffiths' chapbook of short stories. I'm not familiar with her work, and I'm quite exited about remedying that situation. Last edited by Dr. Drib; 03-24-2025 at 07:20 AM. |

Finished Siân Griffiths' chapbook of surreal short stories. Beautifully written, but like skiing on polished glass. I was unaffected by them.
My next order of books to read are these three: 1.) Ti Amo - Hanne Ørstavik 2) After Dark - Haruki Murakiami (A re-read. I first read it when it came out.) 3) Gallagher Lawson - The Paper Man ------- Forgot about Ballerina, by Patrick Modiano. That will be on my next list, after I finish the three from above. Happy reading, you ghouls. (You know who you are! ![]() Last edited by Dr. Drib; 03-27-2025 at 08:13 AM. |

Next up was Fair Trade by Sharon Lee and Steve Miller. Set in their Liaden universe. Which was very good, but has the problem of being a book after the setup and before the conclusion. Now: Stormwarden by Janny Wurts. First part of a fantasy trilogy. |

I'm reading The Shadow Casket by Chris Wooding, sequel to The Ember Blade.
Having survived tragedy and treachery the heroes of the story are realising not everything falls into place as you might wish and revolutions aren't as easy to ignite as they hoped. Im only 265 pages in of 794 but I've got to say it's already as good as the Ember Blade, with a good mixture of fantasy, adventure, tragedy and comedy/ lighthearted moments. |

Then I read the second part of the Janny Wurts trilogy, The Keeper of Keys. I think I preferred the first volume. Hopefully the third will be satisfying. But for now, on to Salvage Right by Sharon Lee and Steve Miller. Another in their Liaden Universe. |

After a disastrous foray into the world of Dragonflight, which I really did not enjoy at all. I've had an extended hiatus in reading where I can't seem to decide what to read to get out of my funk. I ended up starting Gods and Kings by Lynn Austin. I'm enjoying it. Historical fiction is my 'go to' genre and this is getting my out of my reading funk. It's that time of year, I read AD 30, 33 by Decker, Quo Vadis, The Secret Chord, and the Robe around this time of year, so I decided another religious historical fictional account was in order.

Next up: Murder in the Museum by Simon Brett. Going OK, I'm just waiting for the first "present-day" murder to happen. There are several possible victims, although IMO there's a front-runner. |

Just read Helix Wars sequel to Helix by Eric Brown. The Helix series follows the plight of four humans that crash on a distant planet. Turns out the planet is one of thousands that follow a spiral/ helix pattern around a central sun. The first book follows what happens to the newly stranded humans, the second book is set 200 years later, humans have been designated as peace keepers of the Helix worlds, but a crash landing on one of the planets reveals all is not as peaceful as it should be. |

I decided to read Spy School Goes North by Stuart Gibbs.
This one was good but not his best. I felt it was too predictable, and the ending was not exciting. Borderline dull. I'm not liking the way the overall story is heading. Everything is falling apart. Rated C [3 stars]. Next I've started The Misenchanted Sword by Lawrence Watt-Evans. |

I've been reading Ada Palmer's Inventing the Renaissance: The Myth of a Golden Age steadily for a few weeks now. Its a true door stopper (758 pages) from a university press, but I am finding it very enjoyable. But I'm also taking my time with it because this is a less than familiar era of history to me.

The MC has a lot of internal conflict and how he resolves them is interesting if not very exciting. Still, this kept my attention, and the ending was again interesting. Although this a stand-alone book the author has written others in the same world the subsequent one is now on my to-read list. Rated B- [4 stars] for originality.
Next, my latest purchase, A Singular Destiny by Keith R.A. DeCandido. |

I really liked that one. The rest of the Ethshar books are good, if not quite as good.
It was quite fun. Then I read Blue Murder, by Emma Jameson. A rather nice police procedural/murder mystery/light romance. Most recently, I finished Shadowfane by Janny Wurts, the third volume of a trilogy. I was hoping for good things in this trilogy, as I like her collaboration with Raymond E Feist. But I probably should have abandoned after the first book. Currently reading The Frozen People by Elly Griffiths. A time travel murder mystery. |
