So not a real Calibre connecting app at all. I'd never bother with Calibre-Web; it seems risky compared to Calibre's built-in content server.

That is not true. Apple might want you to believe that, but https://altstore.io/ is free and doesn't require a jailbreak.

Hey guys!
I'm the developer of the unofficial Calibre web companion app.

- I am currently working on an iOS release, but that will take some time and money. So be patient
- You are also right that the app only works with Calibre Web.

I would love to have a category for my app

Why not give them their own category similar to "Calibre Companion" under E-Book Software? It'll give them more visibility on the forum and I think multiple threads under relevant category is better than all discussions in a single thread.

Any forum admins can do that correct?

Personally, I don't want to have a Calibre instance running constantly on my RasPi, as I don't want to do e-book management on a headless server in a docker container where I need to connect via VNC.

I understand, that I can achieve some of my requirements with COPS, which would be the "always available OPDS server where I can download books from via KOreader" part, but Calibre-web(automated) also adds the option to run a Kobo sync server (correct, Kobo sync server, not KOreader sync server) that provides the option to sync sideloaded books on your Kobo.

My workflow is e-book and metadata management on my Macbook via Calibre, then rsync the Calibre database and books to my RasPi and then use Calibre-web(automated) to sync and serve those e-books to Kobo reader and KOreader.

I'm aware that this is a niche in a niche in a niche but it makes me happy.

Why exactly? If anything it's the opposite.

The standard approach here has been to wait until there is a sufficient volume of interest shown in a new topic

Calibre isn't using a client-server SQL. It's SQLight, so IMO the only valid way to access the Calibre database is by running a copy of Calibre, with Calibre & the data on the same computer and file system.

I've been running/installing/maintaining servers since 1986, Server versions of SQL since 2000, Client-Server databases since 1996, Linux since 1998.

But I've rarely managed much with VNC in the last decade. Mostly I've used web interfaces, if doing remote admin at all (like MySQL or MariaDB).

I do have a RasPi4, but it only has an SD card for storage, and I tested Calibre on it with 8000+ ebooks out of curiousity.

I have an x64 server, effectively off site, via 1 Gbps ethernet, and I've not used VNC on it. I use rsync to make a backup of the local Calibre files, when Calibre isn't running.

What advantage other than the dubious one of not actually running Calibre, has this new app (& "Calibre" Web Server) over the Calibre Content server (which has web page and OPDS)?

Actually I only use OPDS and Calibre Content server for PocketBook app on Android. The USB MS ereaders (Kindles, Kobos, Sony) get connected via USB, which charges them too.

The issue of Docker for a home user is a separate topic.

I don't quite understand your question. The goal is to have a low-powered device that runs 24/7. Running a full Calibre content server on that seems kind of overkill.

By the same logic shouldn't you not let Calibre access your Kobos' SQLite databases? Calibre-Web let's you sync directly to the Kobo, so the Kobo handles the database.

Calibre-Web does NOT update the metadata onb the Kobo; no series info for instance.

Sure you could install nickelseries on the Kobo but then that also would work with base calibre.
