How to update a stubbed book?
Hi
I have discovered this great plugin and I love it. Just a question, I have been reading a book that has like 8 books in it, and suddenly the first two books are removed from the web site, but he is still adding new chapters. Is there a was for this plugin (FFF) to check the latest chapter I have, vs which is the latest chapter thats on the web page, and if later on the web page, download those new chapters and add them to the book. While not removing any of the old chapters? This would only work for stubbed books I presume, so no getting a refresh of any old chapters , which would be possible if the whole book is downloaded. Cheers |

In short, no. Here's a link to a previous discussion on github about it.
I suggest you make a copy in a separate book with the removed chapters. Remove the Identifiers URL from the copy to not conflict on update. |

So, I've already posted about it a few weeks ago, but I've been having issues with the BrowserCache feature for a few weeks.
Since then, I didn't have a lot of trouble downloading from A03 without the BrowserCache option anymore, and I don't use ff.net a lot, so I figured I would try again later. Well, AO3 is unhappy again, so here is everything I know: The issue started when I moved my library to my new laptop. I had done an update on my former laptop and it worked well, and as soon as I tried on my new laptop it crashed. From what I've been able to guess, this issue is that FFF can't find the relevant pages in the cache anymore. As far as I know, my cache shouldn't have changed location, but I still tried to reset the browser cache path manually, with no result. I tried with Chrome and then with Vivaldi (I changed my default browser in between), same issue. My Chrome path is the same (with my user name of course) as the one in the BrowserCache FAQ and I can see that the files in there are modified when FFF opens the pages in the browser. browser_cache_age_limit is set to -1. As far as I know, I've done everything right, and everything worked before and nothing should have changed so I don't see what could have happened. Maybe I touched something in the settings without realizing? Here is the debug file from last test I made with Vivaldi, with Code:
use_browser_cache:true use_browser_cache_only:true open_pages_in_browser:true (I was updating an anthology were some stories are missing) |

(There's a whole history about get urls from page logging in even without always_login for reasons.) You might try use_archive_transformativeworks_org:true (and username commented out) instead of browser cache, that's been working well for me. |

Suggestion, if it makes sense: "Retry last download" in FFF menu, available if the last one was cancelled (job stopped or decline metadata update). Either for site errors, or changing settings before trying again.
Alternatively, for Download from URL, keep URLs from last cancel - this i want mainly because it avoids lots of pasting or drag-dropping as abit diffcult now. EDIT: Might want limit, too, prevent people from hammering site. Last edited by ownedbycats; 04-08-2025 at 12:37 PM. |

Is FFF no longer working with AO3, or is there a new trick that's required? I've tried various different stories over the course of yesterday and today - I've tried URLs, from emails, etc. - each time with no success. Fetching metadata, even for a single story, sometimes just hangs indefinitely with "not responding" (or I cancel it after hours), and sometimes just takes an inordinate amount of time - I've been using FFF for years and years, and I've never experienced this. Once metadata is fetched, and I go forward with updating, most updates fail with 525 errors.
I haven't used FFF in a few months, so I apologize if this is an existing problem and there's an answer somewhere in the 50 pages of forum since I last used it - I did try searching but couldn't easily find anything! I know I wasn't having this problem in December, the last time I did a bunch of updates. Edited: Okay, I did another, clearly better, search and found all the recent discussion of this issue, which I wish I'd done before posting this, so please disregard! Thank you! You can use browser cache, see FAQs. Issues should be resolved later this month, they're changing servers.

I believe it's skipped when a cached entry is found, and that there's separate, hard coded, pause times with open_pages_in_browser.

I got an error while trying to download a story from AO3 today. Never had this error show up before:
'NoneType' object has no attribute 'get_text' Any ideas? |

Nope. Without a story URL, I can't even try the same story.
A debug log would show where the problem occurred. Retry with Calibre in debug (under Calibre Preferences dropdown.) |

Recent changes with FictionMania
FictionMania now gives "429 Too Many Requests" errors should one exceed a very low threshold of total user activity via web browser and/or FanFicFare, with an accompanying message of "If you're a human being, try again tomorrow." A post by a site admin on the hyberboard states that this was done to combat users mass downloading stories and bots.
I got around this by adding "slow_down_sleep_time:10" under [fictionmania.tv], but care should be taken to avoid clicking any links on the site while FFF is working, otherwise your IP address is liable to be blocked till the next day. The default value for this site should probably be raised accordingly. The site also seems to instantly block you when it detects FFF's default "user_agent:FFF/4.X". This occurred several times before I changed it to mimic a Firefox user agent. Additionally, "Story with Images" URLs are not being detected by FFF, with the error: "adapter_fictionmaniatv.py(175): Story With Images(SWI) not found, falling back to HTML." |
