I miss the good old days when P&G was merely the target of a satanic panic.

Exactly! We had bigger fish to fry than worrying whether our hard-earned money was going into the coffers of greedy capitalist multinationals (of course they were--and still are). We were up against criminal corporate bribery schemes, satanic cabals, and subliminal mind-control in advertising and music. Never mind the PMRC!

While I used to stick mostly to Amazon, I also looked further afield at times. I was certainly a Project Gutenberg user long before I started acquiring ebooks from Amazon, and Smashwords has long been a site I regularly visit and acquire from. There have been various others, but a number of sites don't sell to AUS. And as I've said, I did keep checking on Kobo for many years, until they finally improved enough, for me to become a customer, and are now my main source for ebooks. All that said, often it is down to what type of customer you are. For instance, it is rare for me at this stage in my reading life, to go looking for new authors deliberately. I sometimes see them in passing, where something about them motivates me enough to give them a try. A lot of that has to do with my huge reading backlog and the fact I follow many many authors. I do admit to always thirsting for something new though. And for a number of years, I used BookBub to acquire ebooks by new authors, if mostly just the free offerings at Amazon and sometimes Kobo. That is the main reason I have over 7,000 ebooks from Amazon. I did stop using them some time back, having decided enough is enough. Most of those ebooks I will probably never read, despite being as discriminatory about those selections as I was. The chief issue being my remaining life span. I read a lot of series, and have more than enough to keep on with. Sometimes I slip something new in, and sometimes that results in me following a new author. I thrive on some level of variety, to keep things interesting. I follow a set reading list, but often swap things around or insert something new, all based on mood etc. I also prefer to read in published order by an author, and so I am working my way slowly through the works of many authors. |

How so? I don't see the logic in that at all, and following logic is very high on my agenda. In fact, the logic aspect is what drew me into this thread.
They are two very different things. One is no longer doing something. The other is about deleting something. I can completely understand the first. But don't see the necessity of the second. And I don't see how they need to be related. With the first you achieve something worthwhile. The second seems more arbitrary and less of an achievement or benefit and more of a penalty ... a bit like trying to rewrite history. One seems an intelligent thoughtful action, the other emotional. Maybe its my age. Maybe experience has taught me not to burn bridges if you don't have to, especially when there is no obvious benefit. Anyway, no need to open this all up again. I've already declared my views earlier in this thread. |

I see it more as prevention is better than cure. So more a case of why take a certain action if you don't need to. I don't think you mentioned how many ebooks you have bought at Amazon either, over x amount of years, which likely has an impact on your actions. One of the great benefits from keeping your account active, is updates to ebooks. Those updates might be almost worthless, in some cases, but then again I suspect they are worthwhile for many ... especially in this age of poorer editing, and especially with Indie releases. Your account records are also a searchable record, so even with all the lists I always make, they can still come in handy. Anyway, as I said in my last reply here, no need for us to rehash this all over again. |

There is no harm or cost to keeping an Amazon account as long as payment method is removed/ invalid. |

And they don't if you "delete" the account? Anyway they had that from when the account was created, so even if they really delete accounts the "privacy cost" of a now unused account is very low compared to other activities.
