I have 2 PW4s that are now updated to 5.18.1 but were jailbroken while on 5.16.21 and 5.17.1.0.3 firmware. The hotfix, if I understand correctly, will allow you to update firmware without losing the jailbreak. I re-installed the hotfix after updating a PW4 to 5.18.1 and it did restore the jailbreak when it was run. |

If you don’t need the very latest UI and your PW4 is still on 5.12.4 I would suggest to update it to 5.16.2.1.1, which is the last non-hardfloat version. Then you can apply WinterBreak, and by installing “rename OTA bins” as per the instructions, you’ll be able to stay on that firmware. You’ll then avoid all the HF-related issues.
Otherwise if you need the UI and features from the latest versions, then you can update to any firmware up to 5.17.1.0.3 and apply WinterBreak. Once the jailbreak is properly installed you can then update to 5.18.1 if you wish, and install “rename OTA bins” as it’s not guaranteed the jailbreak will survive future updates. |

Has anyone else noted the with the update to 5.18.1, the .active_content_sandbox directory has no contents? This would seem to make WinterBreak unable to jailbreak 5.18.1.

PW3, FW 5.16.2.1.1, first jailbreak of this device - has it been successful?
If ;log mrpi attempts to install something, and there is a KUAL launcher visible even though there is no option to disable/rename OTA updates which I see others mention, is this enough to confirm the procedure has been successful? I am unsure as although the Winterbreak screen told me to proceed to the hotfix which seemed to work, and ;log mrpi now responds (it did not after my first attempt, even though KUAL was as I describe below and the button for MRPI in KUAL responded, and during which my firmware upgraded to 5.16.2.1.1) I did not receive a success message at the end instead a series of messages and screeens including one with a bomb: Code:
****MKK KEYS **** Code:
* KUALBooklet 18b218e I * Running install.sh... Failed to remount rootfs RO, waiting... Success. :) Code:
* KUALBooklet 18b218e I * Running install.sh... Really failed to remount rootfs RO -_- A reboot would be recommended Code:
Done, restarting UI... Like I mentioned KUAL opens with a menu containing KUAL, Helper, and x Quit, and inside the KUAL submenu there is just an option Sort menu 123, and inside the Helper submenu just Install MR Packages, with no option for rename or OTA often mentioned in this thread, unless I should only see that if this was not the first jailbreak on this device? I have gone through the jailbreak several times, including a double reset, and the result is the same whether I use KUAL and MRPI from the linked guide or directly from NiLuJe and Marek, and whether I install Update_KUALBooklet_hotfix_*_install.bin or not (which is referenced in the guide but not provided so I used NiLuJe's version). Is what I describe expected or is there something else I need to do before I try to install KUAL+ etc.? |

WinterBreak is the jailbreak Run Hotfix is the hotfix to maintain the jailbreak after the initial break MRPI is a package installer KUAL is an app launcher RenameOTABin is an optional KUAL extension that blocks automatic updates KOReader is an optional alternative reading application Remember, after you install RenameOTABin, you still need to open it and run Rename so that it takes effect. It will reboot after you select it. Last edited by Frogm4n; 03-27-2025 at 10:17 AM. |

Edit: Ah I see renameotabin is covered in the next part of the guide which I had not gotten on to before today. ![]() Thanks also to HackerDude and the WinterBreak team, and all of the other devs on MobileRead for sharing their different work. Last edited by firstname; 03-27-2025 at 12:18 PM. |

I can confirm: I updated my 6" 2024 Kindle to 5.18.1 and it is impossible to copy the .active_content_sandbox folder to the device. Unsure if a newly purchased device will ship with this firmware.

Good evening,
Due to the last posts, I was a little unsure whether I can still update the Kindle Colorsoft with the wonderful "winterbreak". After I registered the device at A., I recognized that the firmware Kindle 5.18.0.1.0.1 was already installed - the device was delivered today. Now I have done it exactly according to the instructions in the first post and I can confirm, at least for the "Kindle Colorsoft", that there was no problem at all for the "Winterbreakt" installation. All hotfixes could be copy and activated. The renameotabin folder could also be played through and the KOReader in the current nightly build is running. Greetings VF |

So it looks as if Amazon breaks WinterBreak in 5.18.1 going by the previous post where 5.18.0.1.0.1 was able to be jailbroken.
