Maybe you want to check the Reading Goal plugin. You can organize and keep track of your readings. You would have:

1) Shelves: Want to read, Reading, Read, Abandoned
2) View your books by year/genres
3) Reading records
4) Reading statistics and graphs (daily, monthly, and by genre)
5) You can also create Custom Challenges to refine your priorities

That sounds great. I definitely will adding that plugin!

You can also use the Reading List plugin. It can update a series column.

That's what is great about calibre (well, actually everything about it is great, but especially great ) - there usually is more than one way to achieve something.
