There is no Kindle version of any version of epub in reality.

Mobi from places other than Amazon can include azw3.

Surely it's more about data gathering than serving the user.

azw3 vs KFX visual differences are an Amazon political / marketing decision. An azw3 can be pretty nearly identical to the epub sent to Amazon by a Publisher. A KFX file is made from the same source as azw3. Any "obsoleting" of azw3 or superiority of KFX for reflowable novels is a cosmetic Amazon decision. Not having epub support on Kindles for the last 15 years is also political.

There is a new firmware update (version 5.18.1) for 10th generation and newer Kindles.

I have decided to wait on installing it for now due to Amazon's recent actions in tightening DRM in the Kindle apps and removing Download & Transfer. I will leave it for others to discover whether or not it contains new DRM or jailbreak mitigation.

Is 5.18.1 inevitable for these newer Kindles or is there a way to block updates (short of never connecting to WiFi).

(My Kindles are all older and no longer receiving updates, so I'm not up on the latest.)

Jailbreak + renameotabin prevents firmware updated with wifi enabled.

Well, you could reduce the free space on the kindle to be too small to hold an update file (around 200MB)

That doesn't sound like much of a solution

In any case, it's not for me. My Kindles are too old to receive updates. I'm asking because I maintain the Dealing with Kindle ebooks in calibre thread, and if 5.18.1 contains new DRM, forced updates would be dire for owners of newer Kindles models as far as Method 3 goes.

In my limited testing (all 5 books), you can still copy KFX books from a Kindle running 5.18.1 to calibre assuming you have the the appropriate plugins installed in calibre.

I'm not sure I have ever come across AZW or AZW3 outside of Amazon and Amazon tools.

But admittedly I don't use that many other sites or sources, aside from Kobo and Smashwords and Project Gutenberg (and related) and BookFunnel and sometimes direct from an author's website. Some sites don't deal with AUS.

Most of those, if they provide a download for the Kindle, offer an ebook.kindle.epub type of file. You can see that most easily at Project Gutenberg which usually has an image and noimages variant as well.

I can confirm that. It's currently working ... until Amazon adds another lock.
