Thank you. I have just tried your suggestion to move a book file. Moved books to both a new folder, and the root location, on both my kobo's. It still doesn't show up in the database.
I have also updated to the latest version of calibre, updated plugins, uninstalled all kobo plugins to use the new inbuilt driver.

And no, I don't store books in the .kobo directory :-) I just noticed that the modified date gets updated.

If you have the KoboUtilities plugin installed, does it report any issues with your database? Have you restarted your Kobo to make sure that the in-memory copy and the on disk copy are synchronized? After sending a book to your Kobo and safely ejecting, does the Importing Books black page come up and show the progress bar?

I can't seem to install Kobo Touch Extended from the Calibre 'Get new plugins' option.
I look for it, find it, install it, restart calibre, and... it's just not installed and appear in 'Get new plugins' as 'Not Installed'.

Trying to set up Calibre to be able to create Collections on a new Kobo and I'm going mad.

Are you using Calibre 8.x? It's not needed anymore, so disabled automatically. Features in baseline Calibre now.

Thank you, so that's not the explanation as to why Calibre can't create Collections on my Kobo. Uh.
Going slightly mad after nuking an afternoon on it.

Collections was always part of main KoboTouch driver. Not extended.

Two things. Make sure Automatic Metadata Management set in Calibre settings (Sending to device). And colleciton management in KoboTouch settings are right.

Well, the problem was the lookup name !
Unfortunately the whole thing doesn't do what I wanted in the first place (which is create and populate a bookshelf from Calibre without having to convert the books again. Just a way of selecting my next probable reads without using the Kobo slow tactile controls).

As long as metadata management is set to automatic there should be no need to reconvert books to change collections; it happens automatically each and every connection of Kobo to calibre

Since I switched to Calibre 8 any book sent to my Kobo Libra appears in the device folder but doesn't transfer to the Kobo.
It shows in the Kobo's own database when I access it on my laptop but it isn't on the Kobo itself.
I have tried re-installing Calibre 7 and have messed with all the configuration settings and it showed as a book without a folder in the Kobo's own database viewed from the laptop

In desperation I downloaded portable Calibre 8 and again the books appear in kobo's own database viewed from the laptop in the correct folder format but do not appear among the books actually on the Kobo.

I do not know if the problem is with Calibre or with the Kobo itself and I don't know what else to try except a factory reset. Any suggestions would be welcome.

What is the extension on the filename that you are sending? Have you tried copying a .epub format ebook to your Kobo without involving calibre? Does the import screen show up after safely ejecting? Where are you copying the books to on your Kobo? I'd suggest a directory in the root of the exposed storage (I use eBooks as the directory name with the following template in the KoboTouch driver's Save template:

Code:
eBooks/{author_sort:sublist(0,1,&)}/{title} - {authors:sublist(0,1,&)}
And I am totally uncertain about what you mean by "It shows in the Kobo's own database but it isn't on the Kobo itself"? When you look at My Books with the filter set to All, the books are not visible though the database shows them as present?

You have checked your settings in the KoboTouch driver since the KTE driver is blacklisted in calibre 8?

When you run KoboUtilities Check the Device database, does it return OK?

Have you restarted your Kobo to ensure the in memory and on disk databases are consistent?

1. Book title ends in kepub and says epub document.
2. Tried copying to device folder on Calibre directly from download.
3. New books do not appear in My Books
4. New books were sent to same parent folder as all the previous books.
5. When I open D/Kobo ereader on my laptop the books show as present on the device.
6. Started using Calibre 7 because of Touch extended driver missing on 8
7. Yes device database OK
8. Restarted Kobo at least 30 times.

If you enable showing extensions for known filetypes in Windows, do the books now show as .kepub.epub? A Kobo ereader does not know what a .kepub file is. Does calibre's details panel show EPUB or KEPUB or both?

How do you copy directly to the device folder from calibre? Are you referring to send to device or are you pointing save to disk at the Kobo's exposed storage?

calibre 8's KoboTouch driver has all the functionality of the KoboTouchExtended driver and so the KTE driver is not needed anymore. If nothing else, the author of the KTE driver has not been around MobileRead that much lately and bug fixes were very slow.

The settings for the KTE driver are not copied to the KoboTouch driver when updating so make sure to open the KTE configuration and save any items that you've changed before updating.

I've added a .zip file called tester.zip to this message. Unzip the tester directory into the root of your Kobo and see if the two files inside get imported.
Attached Files
File Type: zip tester.zip (25.63 MB, 21 views)

Thanks for your help, David.

All the book files are in the following form:

Name of Book - Author.kepub 30/03/2025 21.35 EPUB Document 847kb

All of the problems started with Calibre 8.1

I appreciate the tester.zip but there are no books at all in my Kobo's Root folder. They are all in one folder named KOBOeReader which also contains a folder inside it called Kobo which holds the Root files. I believe the books are also held in KoboReader.sqlite.

I just decided to give Calibre 8.1.1 another chance. this time I didn't alter anything or tried to install the extended driver which kept disappearing when I first used 8.1.1.
I successfully managed to send 2 books to the Kobo using send to main memory like I ususually do but when I ejected the Kobo the books were nowhere to be seen on the reader. After rconnecting I also found that they were no longer in the Device folder on Calibre however both books are in the Kobo file folder that I can see on the laptop with all the other books on the Kobo.
When I eject the Kobo from Calibre there is no sign that the books are transfering to the reader as is usual when I send books. I forgot to mention this before.
Do you think it may be a Kobo problem and I need to try a factory reset?
