| Enthusiast Posts: 25 Karma: 10 Join Date: Mar 2025 Device: kobo libra 2 | Can creating "collections" in kobo result in a much slower device and alter perfs?

Not sure if that's possible ; my kobo libra 2 just became slower after I updated metadata and created collections (based on calibre tags) . Can it be that it slowed things down that much? I've read collections can create issues and slow the device down , but I only got 15 of them (I only have 15 tags) https://imgur.com/a/HUcPz1J (video showing the slowdown) Or did something get corrupted ? I wanted collections but I kind of regret it since the experience is now more ... sluggish (Unless I'm crazy and it isn't actually slower, what do you think objectively?) |

I keep all of my books in collections, and they're managed by Calibre. I've never noticed any deterioration in the performance of my Kobos resulting from the use of collections.

Steps for the things I did I manually added tags for 150 books I downloaded metadata using calibre "download metadata from internet" (with tags) for 78 books, then I modified them individually by changing some tags (but I kept everything like book numbers etc , all the metadata ) Then I updated metadata on my kobo using kobo touch "update metadata on device " Can it be the reason of why my device is slower ? Did metadata corrup something ? |

Your Libra 2 is not slowing down.

It's worse with older model devices. I have maybe 100-200 categories, and I've found that if I put more than 100 books in any one category, it causes problems on my older devices. My newer devices seem to take 150+ without an issue. So this threshold is not fixed and may even depend on number of categories. The UI performance is only moderately impacted by this, but sync is absolutely killed by having too many books in a category. Not sure why side loaded books and categories would mess with sync, but it does.

Now, it might be that the number of collections is relevant; I use, as you can see, only eight, so I'm in no position to comment on that.

It is quite likely the issue is triggered by a combination of the number of collections and the number of books in the largest collection.

I also wondered if the amount or proportion of available storage might be relevant. (Although I have a lot of books on my Mini, it still has a great deal of space available: I put a 32GB card in it last year.)

I have a Libra 2. I watched the video and on my Libra 2 I hit the My Books button at the same time as the OP did. His Libra 2 is no slower and mine is not slow.

I know for sure the speed of the SD card makes a huge difference.

The speed looks as expected to me as well. It didn't seem slow until I got my wife a Clara BW, and now my Libra 2 looks slow. (Hey Kobo, where's by Libra BW?)

The Libra 2 is using an microSD card. It could be an A1 card. The Clara BW is using EMMC. Also, the Clara BW has a faster processor so it process the data faster. And finally, the Clara BW has a faster screen and probably a faster chip to drive the screen.
