Troubleshooting Voyage(special offers) will not factory reset (trying to jailbreak)

It is a Kindle Voyage FW: 5.11.1.1 (with special offers)

Been in airplane mode for 5+ years

Followed https://kindlemodding.org/jailbreaking/WinterBreak/ and everything went fine except I can't get the mesquito to pop up. I read users reporting it taking numerous tries so despite the insanity of doing the exact same thing repeatedly and expecting a different result I made another 12 attempts at it and all failed to get mesquito to pop up.

Undeterred I tried to:

Factory reset in online mode, no change in device
Factory reset in offline mode, no change in device
Factory reset via DO_FACTORY_RESTORE in root folder, no change but file was gone after reboot

When I say "no change" I mean the side loaded books are still there and it's still registered to me.

I tried to reregister the device and that was a nightmare and still resulted in all my sideloaded books returning.

I tried to delete the sideloaded books via calibre and they deleted, until I reboot the device and they returned

I tried to delete the sideloaded books via the file manager and they deleted, until I reboot the device and they return

I tried side loaded a book and then deleted all the books, all the previously side loaded books returned after a reboot but the "new" sideloaded book did not return.

Can someone offer advice here? Is my kindle cooked, it won't save any of my side loaded books if I restart it now (which isn't often but it's annoying)?

A kindle reverting to an old state following a reboot is a sign that the SSD has failed.

Okay that would explain a lot and wasn't something I came up with whilst researching the dilemma. If that is the case (and it very likely is) then at least I got a good decade out of it.
