I just took a look at the native support and it's nice! It's awesome to see calibre get native KePub support.

And, for anyone wondering about interactions with the KePub plugins, Kovid already thought of that. Native KePub support is used even if all my KePub plugins are installed.

What will happen to this plugin (and the others)? Maintain for older Calibre versions?

It's been in "maintenance mode" for quite some time now, but once the new calibre is released it's going to be "critical maintenance only". My stance has always been "update to the latest calibre if at all possible", which with native KePub support means this plugin becomes unneeded. But I'm not going to pull it down, the code will remain (the repo will be archived) and people using older versions of calibre can still search for and find the plugins.

I've always said that I want to see any bug reproduced in the latest calibre if you're not already there, and that's not going to change. What that will mean for people on older versions of calibre is that if you still see the bug in the latest calibre I'll direct you to file a bug against calibre instead (and use the newest calibre to get the fix), and if you don't see the bug in the latest calibre your fix is to upgrade calibre. The exception will be that if you find a security issue I'll fix that whether or not it's in the latest calibre. Otherwise, it's highly unlikely these plugins will see any more updates.

What will happen with Kobo Touch (without extended).

Currently I use some feature from Kobo Touch Extended like setting subtitel and a template to ignore some of my collections. The same settings are available in Kobo Touch.
So when KTE will be skipped, shall I activate KT or will Calibre also support the feature I currently use from KTE?

I'm not sure I understand this, but: The settings aren't auto-transferred. KTE is just disabled, so you can copy the settings over. You'll need to manual activate the Touch driver I think.

What will happen to those on a MAC who cannot upgrade?

I'm not bothered about Windows users on an older Windows. It's their choice to not upgrading to Windows 10 and be stuck with an older calibre. Linux is the same. No reason not to be able to run the latest calibre.

Over the the calibre Friday Preview thread, when this was announced, I did mention a feature from KoboTouchExtended that I use and it was added in and it works. The only thing that changed was the program code I needed to use.

When you're choosing to run a computer that's getting on for ten years old or older, you just accept that you may not be able to run the latest and greatest software versions. It has always been so.

Thing is, a lot of those MACs would be able to run Windows 10. Which means they could then run the latest calibre.

It's Apple that decided to no longer support them. I wonder how many "old" MACs could run the latest OS well enough.

I guess the same it has happened before with this situation. If I remember right there was a thread or something like that for plugins running in "abandoned calibre version".

Yeah, its authors discretion whether they offer older versions.

Nothing prevents users from taking a backup of their calibre preferences directory; a plugin is nothing more than a zip file stored in that location.
