PW3 Fw. 5.8.5 / 1 book download NOT possible

Hi,

found my old PW 3 with FW 5.8.5 which I jailbreaked.

- Updated hot fix to "JailBreak-1.16.N-FW-5.x-hotfix"
- Updated KUAL to "Update_KUALBooklet_v2.7.35_install"
- Updated / Installed "Update_mkk-20141129-k5-ALL_install.bin"
- Prevent OTA
- Installed "renameotabin" as another safeguard.
- Did reboot

- PW3 was never connected to wifi / registered
- Finger crossed
- Connected to Wifi
- Loged in to the river.
- See my library
- Library get's synchronized.

PROBLEM:
- Can not(!) download a book I bought, which was published Ende 2024.
- Error (from what I remember): This book / format(?) can not be downloaded to your device.

- Tested another book I bought recently: Download is possible an book can be read.

My question:
Has anyone had a similar problem that with an old PW3 a download was not possible?

- Do I have to update to another FW? If so, which do I use and where to download from?
- Is a FW-Update enough or do I have to install jailbreak again?

Books published after January 2023 come with a newer version of the DRM on the KFX format, which is possibly not supported by your old firmware version. You can either update your Kindle to a later firmware, or use the Kindle for PC method (see Method 2 in this thread) to download your book and remove the DRM, so you can sideload it.

Some book formats, such as "print replica", are not supported on most e-ink kindles. (Maybe they work on Scribes?)

Also the update blocker directory works fine on firmware 5.8.5 and even all 5.9.x

Does anyone know which Firmware would be necessary for the PW3 to download newer books?
By the way: The book I mentioned is a normal book/novel, not something special or extra expensive.

As I'm using a Mac, I don't like the Windows-Version for Kindle.
Maybe I try a (rooted) Android phone?

The exact firmware from which Amazon deployed the new KFX DRM might be a bit tricky to identify, but the latest firmware in January 2023 was 5.15.1. I think it should be safe to update your PW3 to the last officially supported version, 5.16.2.1.1; it is a stable version which works with all the original hacks (after this version it gets complicated). If you don't like it you can always downgrade to a lower version.

You can also try with a rooted Android device, but it can be hit and miss depending on the version of the Kindle app supported by your Android release. A related approach is to use an Android emulator; by using a specific emulator for a specific version of Android, it is possible to download books with weaker DRM. You can find the details here.

A couple of items to remember if you update to a firmware newer than 5.16.3. Kindle firmware switches to using hardware floating point which breaks older packages which you may have installed.

I would agree with the update to the latest version. However since your PW3 is already jailbroken, I would suggest unblocking OTA updates if you have that installed, updating the firmware which will likely break the jailbreak (I've seen multiple suggestions to install the latest firmware, restart and then install the latest firmware again), re-jailbreaking with WinterBreak and going from there.

Although it may appear to be a regular novel that does not guarantee that it will be readable on e-ink Kindle devices, even with the latest firmware. Some publishers mistakenly use print replica format for books where it is not appropriate. If you can give the 10-character ASIN that identifies the book it will be possible to tell whether or not that is the case here.

As an aside, there is also a Mac-for-Kindle. At least , there has been. I haven't tried lately. .... tried it .... it suggested I download the newest. It looks quite nice, just opening it into my library. Free.

For me, the problem with the latest K4Mac is that you can't extract the books from it and no other version of K4Mac will work.
