Help me understand something.
Do the statistics function work on sideloaded books? I only see the total reading time, the rest is set to zero.
If I mark a book as read, how can I tell it apart from the other books, outside the device's UI? In calibre or in Windows file explorer?
Kobo Utilities has settings used in conjunction with custom columns that can save some status upon connection.
Read the help file to see if this can capture what you want

You can sync reading status of books to calibre. When they are 100% they are marked as read.

There's no way to tell from looking at the file, it's a status in the database.

It ran with no errors. Looks good to me.

Rating not showing up in the kobo reader

Hi,
I am a kobo newbie.
I have installed calibre and connected the kobo libra color ereader.
ALso installed the koboutilities plugin.

I have sent a few epub books to the kobo reader using the "send to device" and all the metadata is showing up, except the "Rating" field. I have configured the rating field in the koboutilties plugin (using the custom column) and updated. I also got confirmation from the plugin that the ratings were updated for the books in the kobo reader, but I still don't see the rating. All the other metadata fields are showing up, including the other custom columns for the read status.

These ratings show up as stars in Calibre.

I have configured calibre for automatic metadata management.

Any suggestions to fix this?

Thanks,
AK

Ratings don't work for sideloaded books. Only Kobo store.

possible enhancement / addition to Kobo Utilities.

Currently it has the abiility to backup not just the Kobo database but also the Adobe activation file(s). How about the ability to backup any custom fonts / dictionaries that have been added to the device (ie files from the fonts/ and .kobo/custom-dict directories).

I can't be the only person who has done a factory reset and forgotten what fonts and dictionaries had been installed...

.

How often do you change those? Certainly not daily!!
I back those up manually when I add them in the first place.

Also, I never factory reset. Instead, I rename screensavers and dictionaries out of the .kobo directory and then delete the databases and reboot.

That does a soft reset that doesn't delete sideloaded books or custom fonts, and I can rename the screensavers and custom dictionaries back after it has rebuilt the databases.

I haven't had to do it since I started rebooting before every usb connection (if calibre is involved), but every time I have to do it, I consider making a shell script to automate the process.

Or a script to automate restoring stuff if I forget to move it aside... (or after a full reset)

I don't chnge them often but.....Also I am *fully* aware of the various reset options. My Kobo use case might be different from many, but resets have been called for over the years.

In my case, I have in my computer a copy of those folders, and it's recovered not only when I do a reset but when I purchase a new ereader (surprisingly, the second thing happens more than the first).

For me, I have various directories (Sage Exposed, KLC Exposed, ClaraHD Exposed, etc.) which get a copy of the USB exposed partition the first connection after the start of a month (most of the batch file is the date checking logic which I 'borrowed' from another person's code). I also update those directories when I am installing a new firmware update. The automated backup is part of a batch file I use to start calibre and does assume that the Kobo ereader is already connected before it starts. Since I also backup the database using Kobo Utilities, this is not something I've used all that often for a restore but has been nice to have a couple of times over the years.

Including more files in a backup should certainly be possible. I've created issue https://github.com/majutsushi/kobo-utilities/issues/9 to track it. I can't promise any timeline though since I'm trying to make some more internal improvements first before I make too many feature changes.

It would be nice to have an editable list of files to include in the backup.

But I wouldn't want dictionaries in my backup. They just don't change often enough, and I already back them up separately, and they're big. I don't want multiple copies of those, where I do want multiple copies of the rest of the things that are being backed up now.

Yes. Let's keep things streamlined. Connecting and backing up takes long enough now.

What I think would work well is an option to backup all of these extras some others want and if you don't want them backed up, you don't have to have them backed up.
