This was my fourth vitrectomy; the third with gas bubble. I'm upright again but the bubble's going to be there for several weeks.

Good luck with your retina, issybird! My brother had one a few years back. It was scary and the recovery is more of a hassle than it sounds like, but he's fine, now. I have the best eyes in my family, but that's not saying much.
My vent -- or is it a rant -- concerns my home gym in the basement. It's about 25 years old and needed an overhaul. It's a simple steel frame with a seat and some attachments for various exercises, two steel cables, and a stack of weights. The problem is that exact replacement parts don't seem to be available anymore. About five years ago I had to have the upper cable replaced. I went to a local fitness store and they referred me to someone who services gym equipment. He was very expensive, but he did (eventually) get the job done. It worked well at first, but within months I discovered some new problems. He apparently didn't have the proper end fitting for the cable, so he simply crimped it in place. The cable couldn't be adjusted, and it began to twist. So, this time I decided to do it myself. Everything was ordered online and delivered by mail or UPS, so it took some time. Replacing the cables was fairly easy. I carefully measured the old cables and found someone online to fabricate a new set to my specs. But the cables run through about a dozen pulleys. I had no trouble finding pulleys of the right diameter, but the original pulleys were of two different thicknesses, depending on how they were routing the cable, and I was unable to find any exact matches. Fortunately, after some trial and error using washers as shims, it looks like everything is working. |

My 94 year old mom fell last Sunday, and broke her left wrist. She used her medical alert pendant, so we were called right after the emergency squad was dispatched. We were about 20 minutes away at church, while on our way, her neighbor called me so I could talk to the EMT.
Trip to the ER, splint on her wrist with a follow up the next day at the Ortho clinic. Several stitches in the back of her left ear. So now she is staying with us, with paperwork started to move her into assisted living. Hubby needs more back surgery. Caring for a 94 year old fiercely independent woman who is somewhat wobbly is a real humbling frustrating experience. |

Had fun on Sunday chatting with a friend of ours who whines every time DST starts/ends. It takes them weeks to adjust, their sleep patterns are screwed, etc. Oddly, they travel quite a bit and, according to them, never suffer from jet lag. A bit hard to comprehend why changing from PST to NST (Newfoundland Standard Time, a 3.5 hour difference) or the return trip is not an issue but a 1 hour change takes weeks to recover from. They and their spouse are DINKs with no pets.

Your friend will have influence over when, where and how they travel. Whereas DST changes are imposed by sovereign states under legislation often enacted over a century ago, no one who elected those legislators is alive today.
It's the ignominy of being controlled by an overly weaning state that screws up your friend's sleep. "Every time a government creates a new law it should repeal an old one." — Kerry Packer Nov 1991 DINKS with no pets — bad — especially of they're boomers. Cat Ladies — good Ψ³ |

I'm having trouble adjusting to this DST change more than I did before— groggy near the entire day. I put it up to my stroke.
