Device: More than I need, but not as many as I would like.

My Xperia A1, although being rather old, was the most responsive in regards to GPS. The Xperia tablet came in second, followed by the A5 Pro C. The Tab Ultra C doesn't have GPS unfortunately. Had to use the power bank to recharge my Xperia A1 during the trip. It's rather old and it doesn't hold a charge as well as it used to. But I also had a data sim card in it, so I could check the weather and send Line messages when I could get a signal (usually near peaks, not in the valleys). Didn't have to charge my A5 Pro C during that time, but didn't use it for anything other than checking where I was on the map. Much of the time, I had it off. Turned it on whenever the path was unsure or just to see how it performed. Did a good job. The Tab Ultra C didn't have GPS, but it was nice to be able to coordinate it with my other devices and see a larger image of where I was. Don't think I would take it again due to the weight. A paper map is lighter. One drawback with the A5 Pro C is that it doesn't support Google Play so I couldn't use my preferential map app for hiking in Japan. Had a couple of others and they were pretty good, but not as informative as my preferential map app. This year when I go back, will take my new Xperia, my A5 Pro C and a paper map as well as a power bank. Will not bother with any tablets or larger ereaders. Probably won't bring any food again either. |

To force getting the GPS (or even other GNSS?) almanach on Android, use https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...sim.gpsstatus2 (once installed, the app is called "GPS Status").When you run it, scroll from the left side > a menu shows up > "Manage A-GPS-state" > "RESET" or "DOWNLOAD".
Beware that the current app version has a defect: It shows "GPS Assistance data downloaded" even if it doesn't get downloaded (for example, if your WiFi router can't connect to the internet). If you happen to run in on a Boox (or any e-Ink-with-Android device), please let us know whether it helped, as I'm interested to get such a device. |

Edit: Tried with this app ( https://play.google.com/store/apps/d....gpstest&hl=fr ) . My Boox page now sees 9 SBAS sources but no real GPS satellites. My Galaxy tab is still totally blind. Last edited by Anghirrim; 03-04-2025 at 03:30 PM. |
