I have bought things on Amazon I could have gotten elsewhere. But I've also bought a lot of things that are not easy to get elsewhere or not possible.

While 99% of my Amazon purchases have been books (first paper, then ebooks). Very seldom anything else. It's been several years since I bought something from Amazon that's not a book.

I thought I would give a few other items a check to see what availability would be like without Amazon (here in the UK) I checked the two main other things I buy (although nowhere hear as much as ebooks) I checked Jigsaw puzzles - very easy there's a few UK based websites selling them and DVD's, now that was a bit harder initially, I wasn't really getting any results but then I thought of HMV (for some reasons they were not showing up in searches for DVD movies) and they have a huge selection, so that's good.

Yes, well, English language paper books are not that available in my corner of the world, the selection is very small. Of course most folks here don't read books in English. Some of the younger people now do.

These days it seems like most of Amazon is just the same stuff from Aliexpress sold at markup and available for faster shipping. I'm also avoiding Amazon (not because of them removing D&T...) and I don't think it will be a huge problem and hasn't been so far. Although I'm not deleting my account because I don't see the need.

For me, I wouldn't delete my account, since I not only have a ton of books there, but I do read in the kindle app on occasion. It's what I got my ipad mini's for. And I do like my kindle's a lot. I'll just 'send to kindle' from other places a lot more. |

But not impossible. I live in the United States, and deleted my Amazon account three years ago. Books have been replaced with Barnes & Noble and ebooks.com. Tech equipment has been replaced with B&H Photo and Micro Center. Every day odds & ends has been replaced with Target and my local supermarket. Clothes has been replaced with JC Penney, Kohl's, and Lee. Music I was already getting with Tidal and Qobuz.

I think Amazon makes people lazy.
8 years ago when I was visiting family in California, my Uncle ran out of tissues. Here I am thinking he'll just add it to their shopping list (and the supermarket is walking distance to their home). I even offered to go for a walk to purchase them, and other items they needed. Instead he walked over to his Mac, and placed an order with Amazon. The next day the box of tissues arrived by delivery, in an oversized box filled with pellets. Such a waste of manpower and material resources. And I could not understand why tissues were ordered via amazon, but other items on their shopping list just waited until the next shop? Nothing about it made sense to me. (Americans ![]() It is one of those memories of ridiculous actions that I can never forget. |

I suppose it might seem a bit drastic to some that I deleted my Amazon account just because they stopped me accessing books I bought, but just to clarify that wasn't the only reason, just the straw that broke the Camels back so to speak.
1 They break their delivery promises quite often where I am, several times I've paid for next day and it turns up three days later (yes you get your postage back, not the point) 2 Working conditions employees face because of the unrealistic delivery promises they make 3 The carelessness of some of the delivery drivers - linked to working conditions I'm sure, but doesn't help when your delivery is smashed to pieces/ damaged. 4 Wastage/ environmental costs, they have tried to address this by reducing packaging where they can, which is good, but they also have a lot of returned goods they dispose of because it's easier than repackaging and re-selling. (Although I believe some stuff is re-sold by third parties but I couldn't find any confirmation of this) 5 Absolutely terrible search engine on their website especially for e-books, it was becoming almost impossible to find books I liked as the results were flooded with absolute trash, books 25 pages long probably written by AI ![]() 6 They are monopolizing the market and pushing the smaller retailers out of business, and this isn't just a side effect but a deliberate strategy. 7 They hoover up small businesses when they can't force them out of business - we had a lovely independent film studio near us that had been going since the 1950's, Amazon hovered it up for Amazon Prime production And these are just the reasons I've personally seen or experienced I haven't included any of the accusations thrown at Amazon in the media over the years because I don't know whether they are true or not. When I look at the list written out like this I can't believe I justified to myself staying with them for so long. Now others may have weighed the pros and cons in their heads and decided they don't mind using Amazon and that's OK, and they may not agree with what I've listed above and that's OK too, these are just the reasons I left ![]() Last edited by Graham44; 03-03-2025 at 04:16 AM. |
