That hasn't been strictly true for some years. While DRM is removed on import, it also runs with conversion and with the viewer, so it's still possible to remove the DRM if you convert your books. Meaning, the converted format will have no DRM, the original may still have.

If we have a way of removing DRM from kfx files on the device, then why are people upset about losing the D&T function? Perhaps I'm missing something, but it looks like we just need to switch from getting .azw files from Amazon's website to getting the kfx files from our devices? Is there a downside to this?

I realize some people might not have an Amazon device and were purchasing books from Amazon's website to read on a Kobo or other app. Without D&T they'll have no means of getting a copy of the book. I get that. But for people who do have a device, won't we be able to continue to use Calibre to save copies of our purchases?

If the DRM has been removed, there may be something specific to that book that's tripping up the KFX Input plugin. The author of that plugin may be interested. https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=291290

Note there was a new version of the plugin released yesterday.

Downsides
1. For devices later than the PW1, you get KFX, if azw3 was on D&T, which is inferior to the azw3 format. Amazon mess with images and formatting etc more.
2. For devices currently getting FW updates (5.17 as I write), it's likely that the encryption could change and then you can read on a different device.
3. It needs WiFi. Not everyone has that.
4. The device may wear out or battery die. That doesn't matter for D&T. Any PW3 era devices or earlier may need new batteries. The battery (really a cell) in some Kindles can't be replaced, so a new Kindle is needed, which other isn't if you read on something else.
5. Newer Kindles use MTP which is more awkward than USB Mass storage on older devices, especially on Mac and Linux. Curiously MTP is easier than USB Mass Storage with Calibre and Crostini Linux on a currently supported ChromeBook (older ones are different).
6. It's more awkward getting the Kindle to download and transfer from it than using D&T.

What would prevent them from running the plugin? If they have a way to get and run the DRM tools used with D&T, shouldn't they also be able to grab and run the KFX plugin too?

The KFX input isn't a problem, also PW1 and older don't get KFX.

KFX output is, but it's not needed at all.

Because Amazon could harden their DRM for KFX files any moment and then we would no longer be able to deDRM them. D&T delivered AZW3, an older format with more easily decrypted DRM.

Couldn't Amazon have hardened their DRM at any time before D&T was phased out? I fail to see why this particular move spells any more doom, when doom has been right around corner for years now. **shrug**

azw3 files are very similar to epub files. You can edit them with calibre's ebook-editor or convert them to ePub with KindleUnpack which will give a result much closer to the original source file (ePub is the most popular source format for KDP). KFX is semi-compiled and a conversion from KFX to ePub gives, from the point of view of someone who wants to edit the book, a very ugly starting place.

From the point of view of being able to backup my ebooks, I really don't care about the input format. From the point of view of being able to edit the ebook before sending it to my ereader, I do care.

They have done so, several times. Then it has been some time before the new DRM has been cracked.
