A big THANK YOU to all who provided advice here.
I had completely uninstalled my antediluvian K4PC 1.33, so I installed 2.4.0, ran the batch file to block updates, signed in to Kindle and downloaded a book I bought several years ago.

I used the "From KFX" plugin to convert it to epub, then deleted the KFX format from Calibre to be sure that the book I opened to test was epub. It all worked seamlessly. To borrow from the book in question I need worry "nevermore" (or at least for now)

I'm having the same exact problem. My imported books are showing as .kfx-zip and still have DRM. I added my device's serial number to the deDRM plugin, so that's not the problem.

I have version 10.0.3 of deDRM installed, instead of 10.0.9 beta. Is that the problem? Where would I get the x.9 beta version?

I had similar problems with all the recommended versions of tools and plug ins. Dragging from the device wouldn't work. But when use the 'add books' button in calibre and navigate to the folder on my oasis with all my books (I think it's called 'info" on the Oasis, it's not the top (root) folder on the oasis) it worked fine.

You should be linking to the alpha. That has all of the latest code.

As has been repeatedly said, at the moment there are no differences between 10.0.9 and the alpha where Kindle for PC/Kindle device DRM is concerned. If that changes and the alpha is capable of cracking the Kindle DRM where 10.0.9 is not, then I'll link to the alpha.

Linking to the Alpha means you won't have to go back and edit all of your links to the beta.

I'm not going to do that anyway. The advice in these threads is given in regard to the current situation, unless it's a sticky post. Even the alpha might stop working at some point.

Along with getting the beta, be aware that you must remove the ebooks that failed to have DRM stripped and re-add them. DeDRM is only run when the books are added. If they were added and it failed then they'll still be in your library with the DRM intact and modifying the plugin/settings won't do anything to them.

Not everyone equates backing up a copy as stealing. In fact in some countries its perfectly legal backup a book. What isn't is posting that same book on the internet.

It's not stealing if you are removing the DRM from eBooks you've purchased.
