This. I've been slowly ripping my collection, because I am tired of the movies I want to watch not being on streaming when I want to watch it. DVD's have been dog simple for years, blurays aren't really any more difficult, but 4k UHDs are definitely a pain at times. I was lucky enough to snag my drive right before they patched things from the factory to block libredrive.

In order to read the data to play it you need to be able to decrypt it, and if you can decrypt it there's nothing to prevent you from removing the DRM entirely. Having that be open source means that anyone can take that code and do just that, so some distros are a bit weary to allow it since some companies have been a bit dickish about such things in the past.

Don't know if and when they will turn if off but I'm done. I bought a Kobo Libra colour and for travel a clara colour. Both are very nice. Far more customizable and a lot less push with advertisements. I still bought books from Kindle but the last book I can remove DRM from is the last book I buy from them. I am not interested in a content license for the price of a book. Finally, if you want to send Amazon a message do what I did and cancel the amazon ads about discount books and book offers. Nothing scares a vendor more than not being able to push its advertising at you.

So I have both Kindle and Kobo devices and as a result, I am not a fanboy of either one. I as well have downloaded all my books and did the Calibre thing. Actually, I have been doing it monthly with books I bought since last time I downloaded for a few years now so it was not a crushing thing.

But, I *think* there is still a way to do what you want with kindle books without D&T or even PC version? I could be wrong. I suspect someone will chime in about that.

The removal of download and transfer is not the end of DRM removal. Not yet anyway.

Sorry the Kobo was not an improvement for you. It is a step up for me.

I agree. You can still strip DRM so I will still buy good deals form Amazon were needed. But I suspect that they will plug those wholes soon.

You're still going to be paying for content licenses from other ebook stores. Amazon is not the only one, or even a stand out. It's basically industry wide. DRM or not is not the same as content license or not. One is a technological mechanism to enforce the other.

The warning says "Starting February 26, 2025", which is today, the D&T option will no longer be available. But I just successfully used D&T to download a book.

The word "starting" suggest this will be the first day without D&T, rather than the last day with it. So it should be turned off, but it's not.

Perhaps they meant this would be the last day but poorly worded the warning? Or perhaps they're just being kind and giving people a buffer?

EDIT: For clarity, I'm in the Eastern US and it's near 8 pm (20:00) my time.

Yes, just read the previous posts. Amazon is slowly rolling out the change. If you still have D&T, good for you, but in a few hours you probably won't, just like everyone else.
