I deleted my Facebook and LinkedIn accounts a few years ago. (Never had a Twitter account). Not so much as a matter of principle, I just never used them.

I've had an Amazon account probably since about the time I became a member here at mobilread, or a bit before when I bought my first ereader, a Sony. I've only ever bought the books from time to time, and always stripped them via calibre. Not a way in hell I'd ever consider buying anything other than an ebook at Amazon. It doesn't even enter my mind to consider them. I appreciate others research differently how to make their whatever purchases to me. But I can say it's not hard to ignore amazon. |

The thing is, I'm not going to make getting some things more difficult by cancelling my account.

D&T going away is not likely to affect my 'relationship' with Amazon significantly. I can still strip Kindle books very easily, like reading on Kindles and with the apps, and using KU and CU a lot. I like watching some stuff on Prime Video. Audible is sort of dead to me, but mostly because it was way to read while doing something else (long drives/commuting, yard work, falling to fall asleep etc.) and none of that is part of my life now. The app is very cluttered with recommendations, podcasts, and poorly implemented content filters, and I find it unpleasant. I have converted every thing to M4B with OpenAudible so I can use any number of audiobook players, and have really enjoyed audiobooks in the past, but it doesn't seem to fit now. I'm buying less physical stuff from them, it can be very time consuming to sift through all the search results for anything there, compared to online alternatives. Tyranny of choice certainly applies there. Local shopping is very limited where I live and I prefer online to 2-3 hour drive to get to a store to get the same thing there. And there are plenty of things not available even with 2-3 hour drive. Last edited by tomsem; 02-23-2025 at 04:39 PM. |

There's nothing I've missed out on buying, and I do like a good bargain, but am practical (and boycott products from x countries, so I always read labels)

Still annoying. Email your authors and tell them why you will have to stop buying their books thats my suggestion.

Downloads for some people may no longer be possible. See Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/kindle/comm...ought_forward/ Get your ebooks now. It may already be too late. This ain't 2010 where 6 books might fill your available device storage. (Amazon may actually be doing ME a favor by drastically discouraging me from buying Boxed Sets)

There's nothing like the warm fuzzy feeling of security and safety your get when using public WiFi to make a financial transaction from a device you don't control to a destination you don't know over a network link you aren't privy to.

Why public wifi? Most folks have a smartphone these days and can share its internet connection.

Lots of people using PAYG rather than contract don't have data on the mobile, too expensive, so only use WiFi on the phone, and via known airpoints. When I used to travel I had a VPN server at home and connected to it if using a public WiFi. A 32 G ereader can store about 18,000 ebooks and 4 G maybe 1800. I've always had plenty to read if out in the last twelve years of having an ereader. I'd only ever buy an ebook online with my PC or laptop. |

Frankly I don't know anyone who doesn't have data on their smartphone. It's not particularly expensive here.
