I never really use an on device store on any ereader. I was just surprised to hear other people still see it on the Kindle Touch. Since it always says it isn't available on mine (the admittedly few times I've tried), I thought it was one of the ones that didn't have it any more. I guess it is just the non-touch screen Kindles that officially no longer have direct access. But as you say, the important thing is the wifi ones still sync for now.

Are you missing some sort of update that added a new SSL cert or something? Perhaps that's why it works for some and not you.

I've used the on device store a few times, usually after finishing a book in a series and wanting to start the next one right away.

Could be, but I would predict that this method would have a limited time span and encourage other hackers at looking at way to break the DRM for a "better" copy.

Book that was published Jan 30th 2025 B0DVLKCPH9 downloaded and worked with 1.39 and was able to remove drm

Even brute force is not bad. Just hold down the right-arrow key for a minute or two. That's what it takes for an entire audiobook. I'm speculating it would work for ebooks, but I don't know. But the point @jhowell brought up about KCR being images, not text, throws a wrench in the works.

Oh well, I was just predicting, not promising. An idea only at this point. Maybe not such a good idea when you get into it.

Amazon closed that loophole by changing KCR so that it now downloads images of pages instead of text as you read. Basically a series of screenshots. Turning that into something useful would be essentially the same as turning a scan of a paper book into an e-book. I would consider that a last resort.

For comics it is not so much of a problem of course.

Yeah, IIRC the way to get DRM free versions off of comixology was exactly that. Have a script page through the book and grab the images out of the cache.
