Custom Columns.. categories... but like "genre"?

I am going to use the phraseology on the
"Calibre > preferences > add your own columns"
page.

[in the preferences page, Calibre calls them 'columns' but back in the main GUI calibre refers to these 'columns' as 'categories']

Anywho the "Genre" column has a very handy feature I like and I majorly depend on: the way the 'cheat' and create the appearance of collapsible/hierarchical quasi-folder structure --when you use the period in the genre.

PLEASE DO NOT **EVER** change this behavior of Genres

Well, I need to to some tidying up of my library, and I need to organize possible duplicates for doublechecking for duplicate status later.

Instead of cluttering my Reader Genre with 'my library work' entries for my maintenance... I decided I would try to create my own custom column that behaves like 'Genre' behaves (when you use the period).

I created a new column named 'mylibwork', type was "comma separated..." 100% matching settings for the genre column.

Except my new 'mylibwork' custom column (in the main GUI page) does not visually behave the way 'genre' does when you use the period.

When I add possible duplicates to the 'mylibwork' column with the following:
"TestingLevel1.TestingLevel2.TestingLevel3"

Calibre creates one long entry in my new 'mylibwork' custom column.

Is there anyway to reproduce this behavior of Genre in custom columns?
Is there anyway to support 'sub-mylibwork' (aka 'sub genre')?
