I Survived the Great Amazon DL Dealdline!

It took me about 4 hours to download and cleanse my complete Amazon ebook library of near 600 books.

I have been casually backing up this book here, that book there for some time. But as Amazon is dropping this ability come February 25th, it was time to ensure I had backed up every book I've paid for.

Interestingly, there has to be about 200 books I've purchased and haven't read. I was a sucker for those $1/$5 deals for "the complete boxed set". And lots of books I MEANT to read, but just haven't gotten around to it yet.

I'm probably good for 5 or six years of never buying another books just to get through these.

But who am I kidding, I will still buy new books.

But Amazon will be the vendor of last resort now. I hear Kobo's books are still able to be liberated.

Fingers crossed, for the moment. If they go to Thorium, then that avenue will be closed down.

I cannot see Kobo going LCP. That would mean releasing a new firmware for every Kobo and updating all the Kobo apps. Besides, there's no word or rumor that Kobo is changing the DRM.

Just because Amazon is trying to change things does not mean the rest of the world will follow.

I know what you mean. I sometimes look through Calibre and don’t even remember buying some of the books I own. I’m a sucker for those deals myself. There is no way I could ever read everything I own in my lifetime but I’m glad I have them accessible just in case. I just got in the habit of downloading and cleaning a book as soon as I buy it so I didn’t need to do any last minute work.

I just bought a new Kindle so I am reading a few “Unlimited” books with my free trial. Then Amazon will become my vendor of last resort as well.

I’m just happy that I found Mobileread early in my ebook journey.

Amen to that. I did use calibre and deDRM long before finding MR; but MR is invaluable in keeping up with all the news and changes. Back then Amazon didn't change their DRM for many years.

NetGalley has switched to LCP from Adobe leaving Kobo reviewers out in the cold. According to NetGalley support they are talking to Kobo to enable LCP books...

I don't get much from NetGalley; my main use has been Hugo packet titles...

Did they say that explicitly? The last update I read said that they were in talks with Kobo to get NetGalley books on Kobo, but they didn't say if that meant Kobo was going to implement LCP or if Kobo users would be able to use ADE. It seems unlikely that Kobo would pay for an entirely new DRM scheme just for NetGalley's sake.

They already release firmware updates for every Kobo from the Touch and up, aside from the Mini. There are other reasons I can see for them to not go all-in and LCP only, but it's well within their current development process to add features across nearly their whole historical eink product line.

I found this. https://old.reddit.com/r/NetGalleyCo...se_about_kobo/

Note the comments, I am also sceptical.

I frankly would much rather see NetGalley Kobo readers left in the cold than to see Kobo implement any accommodation to LCP, which could have appalling connotations longer term. And maybe not so long as that!

The Amazon situation doesn’t bother me personally especially, but a move by Kobo to Thorium would be a gut blow. As an aside, I’m currently reading a book on the Windows Thorium app for lack of alternatives and it’s not a good experience.

It doesn't sound good. That definitely confirms that Kobo wants to support LCP at some point. The question is whether it will replace ADE or be a third option on top of ADE and Kobo's store DRM.

What would the financial advantages be for Kobo in switching to accommodate NetGalley?

I suppose it would depend on how much money it costs for Kobo to use ADE vs LCP. It would also depend on Kobo's internal numbers for how many people use ADE to download their books compared to syncing over Wi-Fi. If lots of people use ADE, it could be a major headache for Kobo to force everyone to switch to Thorium, instead. If not that many people use ADE, then LCP might be an attractive option if the price is right.

If they switch to LCP I will stop buying from them. I imagine I not the only.
