Installing the official Amazon OTA update corresponding to your current firmware (or later), twice, without running the hotfix in between.

As it turns out, I'm already on the most recent available update, 5.17.1.0.3. Do I need to wait until the .0.4 comes out to do this or can I reset the device?

No need to wait, you should be able to just reinstall the latest update.

Apologies for being so dense...I've downloaded the Amazon .bin file and copied to root folder of my Kindle. When I go to update, it says I have the newest version.

Would I go back through the WinterBreak process and just rename my Amazon firmware to Update_hotfix_universal.bin and continue through the process?

EDIT: So I rebooted the device with the .bin file in / of device, and it threw and error...so I restarted again and it came up and the .bin file is gone. KUAL and KFT are still there. Can I factory reset now?

Try the following to install the firmware:

When you copy the firmware files DON'T eject Kindle from your computer, instead press and hold the power button for 15+ seconds to force a reboot. That should then trigger a firmware install.

If I press power to restart, it just comes back up to where I was before.

Just ran through the jailbreak on my PW5 and all working a treat. Installed KoReader too. Made a major blunder thinking I was clearing my library in KoReader (plugged ito PC) and cleared my documents folder (minus the downloads, dictionairies and .cache folder). I have the books on Calibre so no issue but I must have deleted something related to Kual and now it doesn't show up in my library. How would I go about bringing the launcher back to my library?

All the files from the WinterBreak.tar.gz were extracted to the internal storage folder of my kindle. I tried re-copying them several times with no success. Factory reset, extracted again, still not working after following all the steps. Not sure what else to do. The only thing I noticed, and I’m not sure how much this matters, is that there was no button to “eject” my kindle in the file explorer when right clicking. Tried different ports and cables, nothing. Safe eject should be automatically applied to my USB ports though.

It seems you renamed the OTA binaries and forgot to restore them before doing the reset. The only answer I have for you is to try following the steps in the post from shamanNS which I already shared a part of above. You can have a look at the second part of the post, but if that won’t work then it’s possible there is no solution.

Edit: You can also check this page on kindlemodding.org: https://kindlemodding.org/jailbreaki...m-a-reset.html

The simplest would probably be to just reinstall KUAL.

The “eject” function is not present on new Kindles as they use MTP for file transfer instead of USB file storage.

Maybe one last thing, you say “All the files from the WinterBreak.tar.gz were extracted to the internal storage folder of my kindle.” Are you extracting the files directly to the Kindle storage, or first in a directory on your computer, which you then copy over to the Kindle storage? Because extracting directly to the Kindle storage is not normally supported by MTP, so that might be the issue.

Basically if you really see all the files in your Kindle storage (except the Trash folder if you’re not on a Mac) as per the attached image (stolen from the kindlemodding site), then I really don’t have any other idea of what could be going wrong.

I did this and all working fine now, was just a bt nervous whether I could reinstall after my late night cock-up deleting all the other files. Only other thing is now I don't have the 'run hotfix' in my library either. Will I need to redo or add this at any point or should everything be as it needs to be once I reinstalled KUAL?
