And we need to wait a while to find out just what Amazon meant when they referred to "supported Kindle devices with WiFi capability". Does it mean any and all Kindle eInk ereaders with WiFi? Does it mean Kindle eInk devices which can support their next generation of KFX? No one outside of Amazon knows the answer yet. Until such time as we have some facts to work with, endless repetitions of a personal opinion does not make that opinion a fact.

We also know that Amazon has said "Kindle devices with WiFi capability,". That to me means no more eBooks or the K1, K2, DX, & DXG unless you side-load.

leaving off the word supported does not help your argument. Compare the meaning of "Money is the root of all evil" to "Love of money is the root of all evil".

If I remember right Tor also does DRM free ebooks, plus any ebooks from humblebundle.com are DRM free, and also Ebooks.com also has the DRM free section. O'Reilly I think does DRM free still, but only from some retailers, now that they've stopped selling directly (ebooks.com I know has stuff from them that's DRM free)

Angry Robot, an UK publisher of mostly SF/Fantasy, also sells DRM-free on their website (they sell internationally).

This news is ominous to be sure. My only worry about the future is if they publish new ebooks ONLY in KFX format and not in AZW3 format. That would mean my old Kindle Touch (3rd gen model?) would not be able to get these new books because it can't and never will be able to handle the newer KFX format. I'm not sure which generation Kindle is the newest that cannot use KFX but if they go that way, all those old kindles will be useless for upcoming titles. I guess I will find out if new titles will still be able to be downloaded (using wifi, not using a USB cable) to my ancient Kindle come Feb. 26.

Kindle for PC is not the same thing as D&T. You should still be able to download books for the time being, but Amazon could kill off Kindle for PC at any time.

Elimination of older formats only for new books would mean that all previously purchased books could still be downloaded and read on the still supported older WiFi Kindles, while giving their owners incentive to upgrade their device in order to read the latest best sellers. |
