This may already have been asked, apologies if it has been but so many pages in this thread…
I’m seeing some people say (elsewhere) that if they are using the Windows for PC app they can still download the book files to their PC and save/backup that way? I thought that was no longer possible? Can someone confirm? And if so, what version Kindle for PC works for this? Thank you. |

I've been downloading eBooks using my Kindle Touch and then over to my Kindle library in calibre. It's going well. It's a bit slow, but it works.

Second question, when you locate the book on your Kindle does it have the name of the book as part of the filename so that you know what to grab? I am not near my kindle to find out for myself. |

I just won't bother. I've downloaded them all after purchasing them and I don't really care about updates.

Connect the Kindle Voyage to USB and run Calibre. When Calibre isn't busy, select order by Date (newest at top) and then On Device (not the Device column) instead of Library. You'll see the actual Title and Author, not a filename. Right click and Add to Library. Go back to Library view and adjust meta data etc (Series, collections, subtitle, comments etc which all work with a Kobo). I have conversions remove both line-height and white-space in CSS removal by default. You can then convert to epub (best for backup / edit) and then from epub to anything. |

Now it's not even a dot on my to do list. I am curious about their "big" announcement, I suspect it won't be related to the older e-ink devices. Amazon rarely makes press announcements over potentially negative events. Maybe some new device to take advantage of the higher walled garden they're trying to create. FYI if ereaderiq lists a amazon price drop on a book then the kobo price has usually dropped as well. |

A data point and possible Portent of Things to Come
When I chatted with an Amazon associate to complain about the loss of D&T, she asked me to confirm my devices so she could forward the issue to technical support. She said, "Oasis will have the feature to download books , I am going forward with the Kindle Keyboard (3rd Gen) - Kindle 2 (2nd Gen)..."
My K3 still downloads wirelessly. Will it be next to fall, since it only accepts AZW3? Amazon can certainly justify (at least to newer customers) making KFX the only format. If I get a response from technical support that sheds light on this, I'll let everyone know. |

I was looking at an article on Android Police ( Amazon is closing a Kindle loophole that makes it easy to remove DRM by Matthew Sholtz ) which struck me as a regurgitation of several other articles I've see until I ran into the following verbiage about the different Amazon ebook formats:

Sadly though KFX renders with so called "Advanced Typesetting", and ironically it's designed for Mobile/Cell and dialup/DSL connections, the Images are poorer and B&W compared to azw3, and it's less like the formatting uploaded by the publisher than azw3.
All the models from K3 to and including PW1 can't do KFX, but do azw3 (if updated, some didn't originally do azw3). Curiously we switched entirely to D&T when Amazon switched to KFX because we preferred the azw3. Then also it made sense for backups and later when we all got Kobo ereaders. |

Also it's not really about DRM (for publishers), but about securing the walled garden. If a publisher selects "DRM free", the azw3 or mobi really is unencrypted. But the KFX is still encrypted, though may copy to other Amazon apps/devices. The ending of D&T is also about making people have the app or Kindle online so they know more. That's why KU works the way it does. The big publishers don't require other libraries to do that invasion of privacy. It's a deliberate choice by Amazon. They want to make buying an ebook the same as KU so that they no more. It's a lie that's it's about DRM loopholes since no other ebook shop (Barnes & Noble is a real book shop and USA only and Apple is what Amazon are copying) requires the ereader device/app to wirelessly. connect. |

I honestly expect AZW3 devices to get cut in the near future. Like as early as next week with their announcement on the 26th.
