For all the DRM removal I've done of books I've purchased, I never really go back and load books from calibre that much. So maybe it's time to just delete calibre and those books and forget about it.
In my experience outside of Amazon, you can still get a ton of free ebooks and discounts. I have long had a kindle, but it has never been my primary reader (I just got it for Amazon exclusives). Plus, I have had a far better experience with using my local library for ebooks on my ePub devices than my Kindle.

Yup, I've bought very few books from Kobo. I usually hit up Google or B&N before I think to check Kobo, despite having a Kobo.

Bingo. The devices were never big earners for Amazon, it was always about the walled garden. I mean, why else would they put a stipulation in the license for their SDK that you couldn't support Amazon's DRM and any other DRM. That's why you don't see any non-Amazon eReader's that support Amazon.

But what non-wifi kindles are there? I can't remember if the first or second gen supported wifi alongside Whispernet, but I know from Gen 3 on, it had Wifi Support (I have 2 gen3s).

However his department is also responsible for Kindles. There may also be news on that front, and I don't mean good news.
Makes sense. New hardware that's more locked down, and I'd wager even something to surpass KFX.

The fire tablets are garbage though. I have two of the 10" ones, which were supposed to have better specs of the devices at the time, and from the very beginning it was extremely slow and would often be non-responsive. Unless they really step up their game, I don't see that happening. With an app, it is easier to leave the ecosystem, because you have less tying you to it. When you have hardware, there's an extra level holding you back. It is all about lock-in.

Yes, ex-head of the Surface division at Microsoft, Panos Panay. The Surface line of devices are quite nice, although not the usual cheap stuff Amazon hardware peddles.
This. They won't kill off something unless they have a really compelling replacement.

How many were aware of that offer from 3 years ago? I mean, I wasn't, and I've always been fairly tuned in to the ebook industry and have 2 kindles. Even if you did know about it, the situation then wasn't quite the same as if they were killing off support for something. Much different not upgrading when your device still works well for you and not upgrading when your device has functions turned off because it is no longer supported (and being unable to buy books for it would be losing a function).

My 3rd gen Kindle Keyboard is still my favourite device for reading in good light. I actually have several of these, there's an active market for them on ebay. They don't access the Kindle store anymore but they do download books from my Kindle library. They have robust wifi and the worldwide free 3g still works if I'm around a 3g mast. New batteries and screens are readily available and replacement is easy. Other parts can be swapped from other devices. I can see myself keeping one or more of these going practically forever so long as Amazon doesn't cut off access.

I did make a couple of changes to the script. I changed the site to amazon.ca and also to the Purchased items page and dropped the wait time to 5000 ms from 14000.

Code:
// @match        https://www.amazon.ca/hz/mycd/digital-console/contentlist/booksPurchases/*

// Wait a little before processing the next dropdown
              await new Promise(resolve => setTimeout(resolve, 5000));
Works with Violentmonkey too. I got rid of the wait time entirely (just commented out that line in the code) - there's no reason why the script needs to wait for one download to finish before starting the next one.

The K1, K2, DX, and DXG all did not have WiFi. They have cell service that may be either going away or gone.

With D&T going away I wanted to test liberating from my new PW6 so I bought two free books and copied both the kfx and the folder for each of the books to my Downloads folder. One of two books were liberated.

I did the same with my PW3 and both were liberated. I just wanted to pass this along that definitely an older device helps with liberation.

I’ve never done this before and from an eInk and maybe there’s a better way but wanted to test before the D&T service is shut down.

If you ca remove the DRM from Kindle eBooks without D&T, then you can continue buying from Amazon. If you cannot, then you'll have to buy elsewhere.

I did test 3 random eBooks with my PW3. All 3 were able to have the DRM removed and they were able to be converted to ePub. I am using the Alpha release of DeDRM.

I have heard several people mention Amazon deleteing sideloaded books. I have never had that happen. I leave my Kindles connected to wifi all the time and let them update whenever they want. However, I do use Send to Kindle to send my non-Amazon books to my Kindles so all my devices and apps will sync. Is that not the same as sideloading?
I just registered my old Kindle to AMAZON JP to read and download manga and it removed my entire backup classic-lit library.

Hundreds of books dating back to classical times, the Victorian and the Middle Ages.

Spoiler:
Good thing I'm a pessimist and backed it up.

Ps By the way, the downloads stopping blurb in on the Japanese Amazon site too.
