It's pretty straightforward. I counts how many pages you register on a given day. I don't see any other way.
If you only make an entry after some days reading, then it's useless to you.

Could you make it so we can enter what we've read in either pages or % and be able to change the date (default to today) like you can on Storygraph? The plugin could get the number of pages from the pages column. That would mean we would not have to plug in or reader every day we've read. Also, if we were reading in bed and crossed the date line, the stats would be off.

I would rather manually enter the info then to plug into the computer daily. Also, if I was on vacation, I would not be able to plug into the computer as it would be at home.

There is another issue I'd like to address. Can we have audiobook support. I know we'd have to enter the data for that manually. But that's OK.

You can't have two columns to automatically update the plugin. It would cause double entries every time.

As for updating your readings, let me explain how the plugin works:

1) A new record is added to your database every time you change your reading percentage.
2) You already can add multiple entries, for multiple days, manually. Just add them in order. Example: add today your record for monday, then for tuesday, then for wednesday, etc. Change the date/pages first, then the %.

About audiobooks, I don't plan adding a duration entry, but you could use the physical pages and % as a replacement.

Like I said before, the modifications in the test version were read only. To create the graphic, the plugin just read the database, no data is written, so it cannot wipe your data.

Then you said about your backup and I thought this may be the cause. Maybe your backup was being done while you were editing your database (adding a new book, or a new reading entry). That could possibly cause problems.

Was the database open? I found JSONs wipe easy.

They wouldn't be empty. If you enter the date, then the %, a complete entry will be created as usual.

I don't get it. As far as the plugin is concerned, all data is manually filled (in your calibre library, not directly in the plugin).
If you do not want to enter the %, but the read pages, my suggestion would be to created composite column, calculating the % based on your read pages column.

Well, now you have auto backup configured, so you are safe. In case it happens again, try to observe under what circumstances.

All I did was install the 2nd test plugin and restarted calibre. Then I went to see the changes and it asked me to configure it

If you use Action Chains. With action_chains_experimental = True, play with this action chain. I use it with physical books but you can change it to put the percent directly.

If you add a blank to the reading log, just open it and open the reading log and delete last entry. Save it and it'll replace with the filled out one.

I've found a couple of bugs.

1. The month graph will not resize if you make the window larger.
2. The day graph will not resize when you make the windows larger until you go back to the month view and then back to the day view.
