Author Sort when sending converted files to Kindle App on ipad

I had a bunch of mobi files I wanted to send to the kindle app on my ipad.
I also wanted to do some minor editing of the titles.
So I edited the metadata before I did the conversion from mobi to epub.

When I sent them to the kindle app on my ipad, they showed up perfectly when I sorted by title. But, I couldn't find them when I sorted by author.

I finally found them in U.

I went back and checked the metadata and it looked fine.

Could the kindle app be seeing the author as unknown?

When did I do wrong and what can I do to get them to author sort correctly.

You should be able to edit the author when you send the book. At least you could a few years ago; not sure about now.

I've done this process plenty of times since I started using Calibre.
The author sort problem just started a few weeks ago.
I probably experimented with a setting somewhere.
I've gone back and did a lot of "restore default".
But, I that hasn't fixed anything.

If you open the send to kindle app, can you edit the author field there?

No. It just sends the file on it's way.
I tried e-mailing files and that didn't make any difference.
I assume both of those methods just send a file on it's way.

I put a brand new copy of Calibre on a backup machine.
All the settings will be the original ones without any changes that I made.
I'll compare both installations and see if I can find a difference.
