Amazon ending support for fixed-layout books published in MOBI format

Amazon has announced that beginning in March they will no longer accept MOBI format from publishers for fixed-layout books. Support for publishing reflowable format books in MOBI format was discontinued in 2021. However fixed-layout MOBI, as produced by Amazon's Kindle Comic Creator and Kindle Kids' Book Creator, has continued to be accepted until now.

This does not mean that MOBI format will be dropped entirely. Amazon will continue to produce MOBI format for delivery to older Kindles.

Effective March 18, 2025, we will no longer support MOBI files for fixed-layout eBooks. This change completes our transition away from the MOBI format, as we previously ended support for MOBI files for reflowable books on August 1, 2021. For publishing new fixed-layout and reflowable eBooks, please use EPUB, DOCX or KPF files. For horizontal episodic manga, use JPG images or an EPUB file.

Kindle Comic Creator and Kindle Kids’ Book Creator will be unavailable from March 18, 2025

eBook creation tools Kindle Comic Creator and Kindle Kids’ Book Creator will be unavailable for download from February 6, 2025 and we will not accept Mobi files for publication after March 18, 2025. We understand this may affect your eBook creation process. We recommend you create future fixed-layout files for comic and kids’ books in the Kindle Package Format (KPF) with Kindle Create or use EPUB. When you make your book with Kindle Create, you can add Guided View for a cinematic reading experience that moves readers from panel to panel or across artwork.
