I think most of us have gone through that stage before realizing that most of the freebies were priced correctly.

Yes, sometimes I go through my Calibre library and think “Why did I even bother to get this?” But I can’t bring myself to delete them. LOL

I haven't deleted anything either, even the ones I know I'm never going to read.

They used to give away some good books temporarily. Now they just discount them temporarily. So the price of a good "freebie" has gone up to about $3!

Well, I was looking through my Calibre library and a cover caught my eye. It was a book I got for free, and I decided to give it a try. I am actually enjoying it. It is not earth shattering or award winning or anything like that. It is just a fun cozy, historical, fantasy mystery. The Watchmakers Daughter by C.J. Archer. Added bonus is that my library has the rest of the series. Maybe some freebies are worth it.

Some, yes. I've also enjoyed a few of them. Most aren't particularly good, however.

Some are. The problem is that you have to read them to find out. Looking in calibre, I have the Glass and Steel series from the prequel to book 13. I vaguely remember picking up The Watchmaker's Daughter on a recommendation and I picked up the rest as they went into Kobo Plus.

Another Kindle gal who used to grab nearly every freebie around, but at some point realized it was a waste of time. They are still all there on my Oasis, "just in case". I have no idea what that case might be. Some dystopian catastrophe in which I can never obtain another book, but can still charge my Kindle?

That's what I'm thinking too.

In my case, though, I'd have enough to read even if I deleted all those long-ago freebies. Nevertheless, the hoarder in me won't hear of it.

The one major problem with this book (I hope not the rest of the series) is that some idiot used Vellum to create the eBook. Not only does it look awful to read, it's awful to fix the code.

Many, many books use Vellum (mostly self-pubs). It's still better than those books where the author has obviously just typed the book in Word or some other word processor, knowing zilch about formatting. At least Vellum books have formatting.

Really? After editing the metadata in calibre, I run 3 saved searches in Sigil (called with a total lack of originality, HTML, CSS and Afters) and two Automate Lists, add my cover code and CSS stylesheet add-ins, remove any unused classes and then use DiapDealer's TagMechanic to remove unused divs and spans. Takes about 3 minutes from downloading the ePub to having a cleaned up copy ready to be read.

Whatever else you have to say about Vellum, it is very consistent which makes saving searches an easy choice.
