Amazon and DRM changes

I contacted customer support and reported the issue along with the error message. Agent said that they have escalated it to an engineer. I was asked to allow them 1 to 2 business days. And they’d email me. But I never believe CS agents so who knows.

If you go through their support chat, the other side will eventually give up trying to have you do a 40-second reset, deregister and reregister, restart your wireless router, etc. and tell you that the issue is being bounced to a higher level. Sadly my belief that they will contact me in 2 to 3 business days is pretty low with with the same skepticism as @JBaby.

Just got off CS myself. Yeah, I'm getting the 404 error again. Tried clearing cookies, different browser, stopping extensions, logout/login. They wanted me to restart my PC, but I have things to do so maybe later. I suspect it'll be fixed by tomorrow evening, though. I was also getting weird, unformatted Amz pages, but that was fixed after about 12 hours, so I'll just be patient. While I grind my teeth.

It is fixed. Last night I was able to send an eBook to my Kindle. That worked, Today I can use D&T.

As of this morning, it appears to be working again for me as well. I'm glad other people figured out how to complain.

Normally changes to D&T might not worry me, because they could be positive improvements. But Amazon's recent actions in disabling D&T for newer model Kindles suggest their moving away from D&T, so any additional changes are probably negative.

Could be a side effect of the stupid changes to List UI. Or anything. Likely totally unintentional.

My USB downloads are also working this morning. Yeah! And I got a new kindle yesterday, and already knew that the USB transfer wouldn't be allowed on the new models. Quote:
I'm wondering if they're prepared for those of us who will quit buying so much. Or, if we're such a minority they'd never notice.

Very likely. I've renewed my library card and will buy fewer books from Amazon, but my wife and I are pretty invested in the Kindle ecosystem due to family sharing, we won't migrate over to another ecosystem that doesn't have that. E.g. there is book sharing on Tolino, but only for selected / approved titles. Sideloaded books are also excluded from family sharing. That being said, I have a de-drm'd copy of all of our ebooks so if Amazon shuts D&T down for good, we're fine. |

As long as there is a way to remove the DRM, I'll still buy an Amazon ebook now and then (I've never bought only from them and I've never been invested in any ecosystem, Amazon or some other). There are a couple of other ways besides D&T. I'll quit buying Kindle books if every way to deDRM them quits working. Will Amazon notice or care? Of course not. Collecting freebies was fun for me only the first few years of using an ereader. I quickly discovered I didn't like most of them, and quit searching/watching for them. So that's not something I'll miss. |
