Otherwise check whether Simultaneous Device Usage appears in the book details and is set to Unlimited. Those can be downloaded and deDRMed. Other books produce a zip file which can't be exported to Calibre.

Is the Android loophole plugged now, leaving the old K4PC as the only option?

AFAIK not yet, but it has never been as simple and sure as other methods. For non-technophiles, it can be fairly difficult to set up; some people never managed to get it to work; and it no longer downloads all books, unless you update the app to a newer version (I didn't try the last, as I found the other methods simpler and quicker to use).

If the book page says something about requiring the latest apps, then avoid.

FWIW, I'm not sure how much this applies. There are ebooks don't list the "Unlimited" and DRM can be stripped

It's really annoying as himself got a freebie which isn't available on Kobo although other books by the author are.

It also works for KFX format downloaded using the latest Kindle for Mac app, at least for now. That is because the DRM used is actually supported by DeDRM. Unfortunately books locked to a specific user/app won’t work because it is not known where the unique key associated with the new Mac app is stored. It does not work for KFX downloaded using the latest Kindle for PC as Amazon has updated the DRM used there to something new that DeDRM cannot handle. |

I have a pw3 and was interested in voice view so was thinking of upgrading. DRM is #1 priority. Which pw would you recommend?

The PW3 is pretty good, only spoiled by later GUIs. The only issues are the 6″ and amount of storage. PW4 is poorer, PW5 is slightly better. Hence recommending an 8″ native epub ereader. The PW3 will do for when the Sage is too big for a pocket. Calibre to manage, and with Kobo: collections, title, subtitle, series, author, blurb, publisher info all easily set and viewed/searched. I've two PW3, one still has a better older GUI.
