It will work if you are on Windows, can find and install Kindle for PC 2.4.0 and prevent it from auto-updating. See the first post in this thread:

Otherwise check whether Simultaneous Device Usage appears in the book details and is set to Unlimited. Those can be downloaded and deDRMed. Other books produce a zip file which can't be exported to Calibre.

It can with 2.4.0. But not with later versions.

AFAIK not yet, but it has never been as simple and sure as other methods. For non-technophiles, it can be fairly difficult to set up; some people never managed to get it to work; and it no longer downloads all books, unless you update the app to a newer version (I didn't try the last, as I found the other methods simpler and quicker to use).

FWIW, I'm not sure how much this applies. There are ebooks don't list the "Unlimited" and DRM can be stripped

Yes, our set-up is Mac only so we get these stupid zip files instead of proper ebooks

It's really annoying as himself got a freebie which isn't available on Kobo although other books by the author are.

My solution was to buy a cheap Kindle Touch from Goodwill online. So I can use D&T as well as download direct to the Kindle without getting KFX. This was before I was given a PW3.

The 2021 Paperwhite would probably be the best option. Anything besides the 2024 ones.

A Kobo Sage and use the PW3 serial number for Download & Transfer.

The PW3 is pretty good, only spoiled by later GUIs. The only issues are the 6″ and amount of storage. PW4 is poorer, PW5 is slightly better. Hence recommending an 8″ native epub ereader. The PW3 will do for when the Sage is too big for a pocket.

Calibre to manage, and with Kobo: collections, title, subtitle, series, author, blurb, publisher info all easily set and viewed/searched.

I've two PW3, one still has a better older GUI.
