Heads Up: CCleaner Free and Calibre

Just noticed (I think for first time) that CCleaner is aware of something called calibre.

I think there was some controversy about it going spyware/adware a few years ago, not sure what happened with that.

A disgruntled employee hacked it maliciously it when Piriform was acquired by the Avast/AVG conglomerate.

The only AV tool that picked it up was MS Defender. VirusTotal didn't pick it up because it didn't include the MS tools, and as far as I know it still doesn't… seemingly on ideological grounds. The stance some take against MS might make one think they killed Bambi or worse.

I use its disk clean up and start up tools because of their granularity. One thing I avoid like the plague is it's Driver update tool (it tells me I have 18 of them)… stopped doing 'just because' driver updates 20 odd years ago.

1. Bambi was not registered properly in the US, so under the 1909 Copyright Act it was considered public domain in the US. (Similar, but not quite identical, issues with Peter Pan, having to do with only one UK version being registered and Disney claiming to have used a different version.) The reasons for this go back to trade wars and hard feelings from British support of the Confederacy, which got hardcoded into the 1870 Copyright Act and not removed for a century (until the 1976 Copyright Act).

2. Animal Farm's target was a lot wider than Stalin, although he certainly inspired a couple of particulars. For example, there's a basketfull of references to the French Revolution, beginning with naming one pig Napoleon and getting less overt after that. Orwell's target was "totalitarianism, with Stalin as a current example" (by memory so maybe slightly paraphrased, from one of his letters to Fred Warburg, the publisher).

In most of the rest of the world creating a work makes it copyright. The USA claim that works need to be registered is self-serving breaking of International law.

Sadly, incorrect. In the USA, registration is not needed for copyright.

To quote from the Copyright in General FAQs from the U.S. Copyright Office:

When is my work protected?
Your work is under copyright protection the moment it is created and fixed in a tangible form that it is perceptible either directly or with the aid of a machine or device.

Do I have to register with your office to be protected?
No. In general, registration is voluntary. Copyright exists from the moment the work is created. You will have to register, however, if you wish to bring a lawsuit for infringement of a U.S. work. See Circular 1, Copyright Basics, section “Copyright Registration.”

Even in other countries, without registration, it's a lot harder to prove that you are the creator of the work.

It's not hard to prove you are the works creator, esp. if you plan ahead.
