I'm eleventyhundred percent sure.

(One of the spiders might have scared her - it was certainly about the size of one that worried our cats when we had them Normally they were both good insecters and - surprisingly for indoor cats - exceptionally good mousers.)

Neko, I just read something about ants. If you sprinkle corn starch they'll gorge on it but can't digest it, so they clog and die. Cruel but you don't poison or damage things around you.

I know, I know, the boudhist in you can't allow it.

You're right. I couldn't do that.

I haven't had many problems with them lately. I wiped my desk down with vinegar, and did the edges again a few days later. As long as I don't leave crumbs, they stay off the desk. I don't care what they do on the floor.

I don't know if this is a vent or a rant... but my husband noticed some peculiar behavior on the part of Lillis, the Silly Bird (my cockatiel). As the Muffin Man put it, "Either Lillis has an itchy butt, or he's found the love of his life. Or something." After giving the protesting bird a bath in his nether regions and not noticing anything particularly untoward-looking there (but I admit I'd never bothered to inspect that part of his anatomy before), I did a bit of online research. Um. Yeah, he's bored in his cage, and amusing himself. It's spring here, which is the beginning of the mating season for cockatiels, and he's at just the right age for his hormones to be in full swing.

I briefly considered getting a partner for him, but evidently cockatiels can breed all year round in captivity, and it's not healthy for them to do so. I somehow think matters would not be improved by there being a female bird in a nearby cage that he couldn't get to. Plus I think he'd be even more aggressive to the Muffin Man if there were a female bird nearby. As it is, the guys get along perfectly well if I'm not home, but if I'm in sight, Lillis feels he has to menace any other males in the vicinity, to impress me, presumably.

Somehow I hadn't realized that by raising a bird I'd be taking on Yet Another Teenager.

Perhaps I should hang a little curtain around the area of perch he favors for this activity. He doesn't seem to care much about the lack of privacy, but I confess I'm more of a prude....

Stupid thing is broken! Now my laptop is running in power-safe mode and that's highly annoying as I get micro-seconds long hickups... Can't even listen to music normally... And it won't charge the battery anymore more...

(at least it does keep the laptop running, so my battery won't drain...)

Hmmm! You could move the cage when the abnormality happens, just to destabilize the bird but that won't last.

Best bet is that Muffin Man will have to join the competition and win the contest (asides from wringing the thing's neck of course). I suggest further study in to what constitutes a win for this type of bird.

Given the activity that I was talking about, my mind boggles at the idea of the two of them having a "contest" about it. In the kitchen.

Other than that, Silly Bird seems to be satisfied to demonstrate that he has air superiority most of the time. The Muffin Man has been known to flare out his elbows to show that he has wings too, and this irritates the Silly Bird no end. The funniest thing was the time the Muffin Man lifted up some of his hair in imitation of a cockatiel's crest. The Silly Bird did not like that at all.

By contrast, the Muffin Man is allowed to whistle, and the Silly Bird will whistle, and they get a bit of a duet going (in a friendly competitive way). If I try to whistle, I get shrieked at by the Silly Bird. Evidently it's a guy thing.

Oh, and regarding the ants, they don't seem interested in my feet or trousers.

Actually, I don't see any of them today. I'm a bit surprised. Maybe the university sprayed around the building or something.

I had a racoon growing up which is a whole set of stories on their own, but at a ranch I worked at for a summer, there was a caged racoon, fox and pair of coyotes (I hated that they were caged but anyway...). Mr. Racoon was very bored and very adolescent. he would watch me cleaning stalls and ummm self stimulate very vigorously. one of the times I went in to clean his cage he stole my bandanna and used that from then on much like a teenager uses a sock....

picturing the muffin man flaring his elbows out and imitating a cockatiel's crest with his hair. that is the most hilarious mental image i've had all day. possibly all month, in fact.
