Seeing someone refer to a book as their childhood favourite, and then seeing the publication year of that book.

There's a certain antiquated word that doubles as a slur. I'm perfectly aware of the first meaning, but somehow I still ended up doing a double-take when someone was handed a burning [bundle of sticks] and told to throw it onto a fire.

I've only seen & eaten those in Evesham, England. Sort of shaped mince pyramids with top chopped off would be the common appearance. Serious cider area.

No TOC in book

Not long ago I finished Sisterhood of Dune and liked it well enough to buy the successor Mentats of Dune from Amazon.
But it had no TOC, it was one large chapter. And that is something that really annoys me. Why? Because i often switch between my readers, Kobo Libra 2 and Kobo Sage. I then simply continue with the next chapter on the other reader.
And I also like the information "Pages left in Chapter".

Mentats of Dune was available in 2 editions at prices $8 and $12. I bought the cheaper one of course.

But it turned out that the more expensive one had a good TOC. This is something that can be seen in the "Read Sample".

So I returned the cheap one and bought the more expensive one. I got a refund with no problem

The third book in the trilogy Navigators of Dune was also avaible in two editions, here it was the cheaper one that had a TOC.

I've seen this too. I just create the TOC in Calibre myself in those cases. The Edit TOC feature makes this really easy.

a bit of logic effort and then some REGEX to either set/change the tags to a h# so the TOC tool you mentioned can do the rest.
(and you save $$ )

Heh. I just split the files if they're not split where they should be and use the option "create from files". No messing with tags or regex.

I thought doing IT training I had seen every level of stupidity possible, though some websites with blinking, iframes, scrolling text bad.

Then I discovered what real commercial publishers were putting in ebooks. I need brain bleach for some of it!

Yes, some books don't seem to have chapters even on paper. Terry Pratchett.
Frank Herbert's original Dune does have un-named chapters (preambles/ extracts from fake history etc) but not page breaks on original.

Usually suitable scene breaks can be found to split file at.
