Open the dishwasher to let everything cool down and your glasses get blasted by the steam so you cannot see until your glasses clear.

My friend's dishwasher opens automatically at the end of the cycle. However I find it tends to leave pools of water on top of mugs so you have to be careful to avoid pouring that over the dishes on lower shelves. (I normally end up unloading from the bottom up to avoid splashing stuff).

I've always tended to avoid the microwave; just personal choice. Not even sure I'll bother getting one when I refurnish my house.

Don't forget to get an air fry. We have one and it gets used a lot.

Yes. All kinds of recipes can be found. OTOH, my spouse and I gave our air fryer to our daughter since we found that we seldom used it.

Yes; the air fryer is one thing I do intend to replace. I used to have a toaster-oven style (Cuisinart TOA 65-C) but think I might just go for one of the ubiquitous Ninja models. Also expect I'll again get an Instant Pot.

I did take advantage of Black Friday to get a nice set of pans at a hefty discount.

We've maybe found a cleaner to come in once a week for two hours. But the start hasn't been smooth. She was supposed to start (and introduce herself) last Wednesday, but her kid was sick. Which, no problem, can happen. So I did the cleaning last week, as usual.

Then she was supposed to come today; introduce ourselves and clean. But she called just now; she had forgotten she had a doctor's appointment. Sigh. So now she is coming over so we can get to know each other, but she won't have time to clean. But next week she'll stay an hour longer. So I'm cleaning again tomorrow (I clean the toilets, sinks and mirrors and vacuum and dust weekly and every other week I deep clean the kitchen, my sister takes care of the bathroom).

A first world problem, I know. But annoying nonetheless.

Fortunately I live in 15 m² so the cleaning should be a light task. In fact, with low standards it's even lighter.

In the apartment we had a cleaner come in every two weeks. But it's nice now to have someone every week. She's starting on Monday, so my sister and I agreed I'll clean the toilet and sinks tomorrow and I'll vacuum downstairs. She can also come during the Christmas vacation on the 23rd and 30th so the house will be clean during the holidays, which is nice.

Currently it takes me 2-3 hours a week to clean the common areas and my floor and every two weeks the kitchen. It's nice I don't have to worry about that anymore.

Fortuitous timing

Yesterday I'd been poaching some chicken thighs to use for meals this week. My friend Bob asked what the difference was in poaching and sous vide, so of course that threw us off in our usual rabbit hole of googling / thinking about it.

I decided to look for library books and found the America' Test Kitchen book and read out various recipes / extracts from it which piqued his interest.

He of course was researching different reviews of sous vide cookers and mentioned a few brands he was interested in.

Have I mentioned it's his birthday tomorrow???

I just thought I'd check local stores and saw that the Canadian Tire close to us had one left of a brand he liked at a price lower than Amazon! I ordered it for in store pickup today along with a copy of the ATK book from Amazon.

TADA.. Birthday taken care of

Sous vide machines are quite useful, and for things you might not have thought of. (Polenta, for example, that tastes like you spent 90 minutes stirring it in a double boiler.) And the prices and features have both improved.

Get an air fryer with two draws. That way you can good two things at once. Like chicken and fries.

Ugh. Stairs

Was at a friend's house yesterday for their annual cookie making day. Has just arrived and had carried my jacket to the main room when I decided I should leave it by the back door.

There was a railing there so thought I would take a step along it and deposit my coat. UNFORTUNATELY I had a brain fart and was on the stairs side, not the landing side...

Next thing I know I'm at the bottom of the stairs, aching. Sigh. Nothing broken just sore right shoulder and back. I spent the rest of the day sitting in the corner.

Had a rough night last night; finally managed to struggle out of bed. Now for time with a heating pad or two.

Groan. That doesn't sound like any fun at all.

I merely slept wrong, night before last. Woke up with a shoulder-blade cramps, and also had to pull out a heating pad or two. Old age ain't for sissies, as they say.
