OTOH, if it doesn't display pdf natively, I don't really see the point... without the journal articles, meh. |

On second thought it's hundreds of thousands to millions depending on the University's subscriptions to journals - we have nearly 60,000 journal subscriptions.

Amazon must be monitoring my posts on this forum. I stated that I wouldn't get the next version of the Kindle unless it had a big screen...an wala!

It's rumored to have a fully functional web browser as well. Wonder what price point it'll hit?

Annoying?
Am I the only one annoyed by this announcement?
I've only had my Kindle 2 for a couple of months, and already they are coming out with a better model? It would have been nice to have at least, say, 9 months or so on top of the scrap heap. And it has stuff that I crave, like the larger screen and pdf support. I feel let down by internet spies. There wasn't even a whiff of this until about 2 days ago! I guess I'm just saying that if I had known this new model was in the works I would have waited. |

1. This is not a "better model". This is a bigger, presumably more expensive model. There's nothing to think it's "better" save for the PDF support which is a direct consequence of the larger screen. If you wanted a larger screen eInk reader, why buy a smaller one? I crave it too, but I recognize that my Kindle 2 is still just fine for reading most books. 2. This Kindle probably won't be available until the fall semester at colleges. So you're getting your advance warning. But it's not meant to "replace" the Kindle 2, and Amazon isn't going to stop selling the Kindle 2 in favor of this one like they did Kindle 1. 3. I don't know why you didn't hear a whiff of this but you have bad spies. The rumor of a larger screen Kindle for textbooks has been around since before the Kindle 2 launch, and was reiterated just a few weeks after the Kindle 2 launch. I am surprised they're announcing it now (I didn't expect to hear anything more about it until June) but this is hardly a surprise if you had your ear to the ground. |

And we all know that bigger, better, faster, color, etc. readers are coming. I just didn't expect Amazon to announce a new one 3 months after their last one. |

The K2 was rumored for months before it was announced. The K-DX or whatever it's called was rumored for months before it was announced. But like I said before, most importantly, it's not a "better" version of the K2; it's a totally different form factor. We don't even know if it will have all the same functionality as the K2. What if it has no wireless and has 12 hour battery life? |

Can anyone say "open book test"? Also, they probably want to change the screensaver collection if they actually want 17-22 year olds to use the thing.

Not something I have an interest in since I only use my eReader (Kindle 1) for leisure novel reading. So no need for a larger screen for me.
But will be nice for people who want a reader for newspaper, text books, maybe PDFs etc. I read a lot of PDFs for my research work, but I prefer printouts as they're easier to flip through, mark up etc. Maybe some day when page turn speed improves, tablet writing works better (I struggle with my sloppy hand writing on all the tablets I've used) I'll give electronic research pdfs more of a chance. |

The K2 is great for reading novels and those books that don't require large pictures or tables of data. The K3, unless I miss my guess, will be great for reading regular (A4? 8 1/2 X 11, anyway) pdfs of class handouts, textbooks and journal articles, but will be too big, and possibly too expensive (crosses fingers, hoping not), to appeal to the leisure reader who wants something she can slip in a bag or a large pocket and use to read books for pleasure on the bus or the plane. People who really need the larger size of the K3 will bite the bullet and put up with the extra bulk (and cost), while for someone who wants to read "Pride and Prejudice" or "His Majesty's Dragon" those are just drawbacks. Of course, before I actually shell out $$ for the K3 I will probably wait and see what the Plastic Logic and the EZ Reader True are like. Oh my gosh I just had a great idea what could go on a large-format reader; D&D books! I have a whole shelf of those; it would be great to put them all on one device, searchable, annotateable, portable. (swoons) Okay, for *that* I might go Kindle even if the other ones are cheaper. |

I'm hoping that they are giong to lower the price of the NYT subscription to $9.95 for all. I'm also wondering if the larger format will let them duplicate the entire paper in pdf, including ads, so that they will be able to get another revenue stream. Then they would be able to keep the two price system. I have a larger reader from iRex and have pretty much moved to the K2, with the exception of full page PDF files. So I probably will not buy this one.
