Kobo Clara HD - Calibre not pushing ebooks to device

As the title says, when I try to put new ebooks (epub) on my Kobo Clara HD with Calibre, it says it successfully added them. But when I check the device they are not there and when I reconnect the device to Calibre, it also says they are not on the device.

I do not know when this started but I can reproduce the issue on 7.20.0, 7.21.0, and 7.22.0.

Does calibre report a corrupted database?

Do you have Kobo Utilities installed in calibre. If so have it perform a database check.

Do you have koreader on your Kobo?

When you disconnect your device from your computer do you see a message on the Kobo screen that it is importing content?

Are you using the latest firmware which is 4.38.23171? There has been a known firmware that can cause database corruption. The current firmware fixes that issue.

Using the Kobo Utilities Device Database Check I get the following response:

Quote:
Result of running 'PRAGMA integrity_check' on database on the Kobo device:

ok

Good so this shows no issues with the database. The iobky reason I asked about koreader is that it can cause issues with books being added to the Kobo database, and the database on the Kobo is used to populate the books on device view.

The lack of importing content message is significant though.

Is the date / time set correctly on your Kobo?

You are sending ePub format I presume.

You are cleanly ejecting the device from the PC?

Have you tried rebooting your Kobo?

Other question is where are you sending the books on your Kobo? I would recommend a folder/directory in the root as the base for the library (I like ebooks as the name since it is meaningful and short). The root directory has a limited number of directory entries so not a good idea to use it. Using any directory whose name starts with a . (.kobo for example) and it's subdirectories is also a bad idea

I've turned it off and then back on. I see that I can do a reset by holding the power button for 15 seconds. If I do this, will that cause my Kobo to reset itself back to factory settings (wipe out my ebooks)? If not, I'll try that next.

Everything is in the root directory as I am assuming Calibre uses that by default. Is it possible to change that directory without losing my reading data? (I'll look into this as well).

You're sure you've tried a power off / on? Screen should change to saying powered off and then the device will start the power on (3 circles flashing).

Rather than a reset via the power switch you can go to Settings | Account and do a sign out from your Kobo account. This will delete the database on your Kobo and remove any books from the Kobo store but will not delete books sent from calibre from the device

You will however have to through the setup steps again

Yes. This is exactly what I see.

Good news is I can see the books on my Kobo now. Looks like they may have always been there but the Kobo just didn't know it (i.e. not in the database). Bad news is I lost my reading data. But it seems like I may be good to go. I'll know for sure when I try to add a new book again.

Thank you both for your help.

Yes; I forgot to mention that ALL the info including reading status is stored in the database!
