Are sharks' teeth quite common and easy to find?

Where we were, yes, supposedly. We didn't come equipped with anything, so we had to do it the hard way (pick up a bunch of shells in the water and sort by hand). We bumped into a park ranger, who found like 20 in an hour (I only found 4 the whole time we were there). There's a cliff formation there from the Miocene that was a nursery for whales, so there were also lots of sharks (which lose their teeth every 8 days or so). They wash down from the cliffs, go into the ocean, then come back to the shore.

Wow! My son lost a baby tooth yesterday and I can't imagine going through that every eight days! I suppose the shark's teeth must wear down quickly and the new ones will be razor sharp.

What do you do with the fossils and teeth you collect?

I'm not yet ready to take on a live shark -- I'm still refining my shark dentistry techniques. I think I may also need to learn to swim a bit faster.

Fitting the Nitrous Oxide mask over the nose is the hard part...

Don't I know it! The mask keeps slipping off and gets torn to pieces.

That's pretty much the idea, they have this rotating tooth thing where the old ones are in front and a few rows of replacement are behind them. Sharks have efficiency down to a science (heh, funny). Considering some of the teeth I found were from sharks that still exist today, but the teeth were over 10 million years old.

I just keep them This is the first time I went. My dad had a giant jar he kept his in.

One day my Pop (grandfather) and his mate were beach-fishing when further along they noticed a shark flailing about in a shallow gutter just off the shore. They both got around behind it, and at the same time put their arms under it and tossed it out onto the sand. The local radio station has a fishing show on daily, and they rang up to say they'd caught a 6-foot [I can't remember the species] shark off Stockton Beach. The announcer asks what tackle & line did they use, and Pop says "None, we just wrestled it onto the beach". All he got in response was cut-off.

It's one of my oldest memories, of that shark's dried tail and jaws hanging in his back room off the laundry. I'm not sure what happened to them.

Cheers,
Marc

Your grandmother finally got tired of the dead fish smell and forced your Pop to toss it out would be my guess. We had a hammerhead jaw for a long time and the smell just kept getting worse. Maybe it finally went away and it's still around somewhere, but it was pretty bad for a long time. (SUmkIII is really into sharks. We're going snorkeling with whale sharks in two weeks time.)
