Which had some short stories that were both good and original. But I find I much prefer novels to short stories.

I read the remaining two catwings children's books: The Wonderful Alexander and Jane On Her Own. Better than the first two, or perhaps I was just in a better mood. Cute children's books.

And now I'm reading Very Far Away From Anywhere Else by Ursula K. Le Guin. Another of the books from the recent Humble Bundle.

I'm reading Remnant Population by Elizabeth Moon right now.

It's one of those books where I very much love it, even though it doesn't have a lot of direct action, but I can't really explain why I like it. The plot is easy to summarize (I won't) but the feel of the book is what is keeping me here. It's quite unlike most other books that I've read. Slow and introspective maybe? Lonely? A few that it reminds me of would be:

• Rendezvous with Rama by Arthur C. Clarke
• Earth Abides by George R. Stewart
• The Slow Regard of Silent Things by Patrick Rothfuss
• Among Others by Jo Walton

Although none of those are a perfect analog. I know these comparables will warn some people away from this book, it's not a book for everyone I'm sure. Although it was nominated for a couple awards.

I read it in 2022. Yes, a very good book, IMO. Not every SF story needs to be space opera.

Not SF or Fantasy, but a story of adolescence and difference. I liked it a lot.

Next up: LightSpeed Magazine #9.

I'm about halfway through Mur Lafferty's Chaos Terminal (the second in her Midsolar Murders series). Mur lives locally to me and we frequent the same local indie bookstore, so I always get her to sign my copies.

I've got the new Murakami - The City and its Uncertain Walls - teed up after that.

Libby just let me know that Wind and Truth was just added to my library's collection. I got the notification at 11:37. At 11:39 when I got my hold placed I was number 9 on 1 copy. 3 minutes later, there are over 20 people on the list. Apparently people really want this book.

I really wish Libby would automatically add us to the list like Overdrive used to.

I only get notifications if I use the "Notify me" smart tag in their web interface.

They're up to 60 people now.

I keep using that tag, and I don't get notified. For a while I didn't get notified, then I did, now I don't.

Next up: The Diary of a Bookseller by Shaun Bythell.

This was actually the bookclub book I was supposed to read this month. I read next months instead. Sigh.

So far it's an amusing light read.

I also read it in 2022, and very much enjoyed it. Yes, not space opera, but an excellent book.

Next up was a random pick from my TBR pile: The Chrysalids by John Wyndham.

An excellent post-apocalyptic novel, set some centuries after what looks like a massive nuclear war.

And now I'm reading The Courts of Chaos by Roger Zelazny. the fifth in his Amber series.

Karla's Choice by Nick Harkaway. Le Carre's son does a good job writing a Smiley novel.

Titanium Noir by Nick Harkaway. Very enjoyable noir detective novel with a splash of sci fi.

Which was very good. A partial resolution at the half-way point of the series.

Next up: A Stroke of the Pen by Terry Pratchett. Stories published under a pseudonym when working as a journalist on a local paper in the 1970s and early 1980s.

Just started on Information Received the first in E. R. Punshon's Bobby Owen series, and the first of the 12 books I've slated to read for this year's Dean Street December , down from 27 in 2022 and 15 last year.
